Best way to use purpleair.com map: click on the gear icon at upper left and choose "US EPA" in the "Apply Conversion" setting, or else readings will be too high. Also uncheck the box "show inside" to avoid seeing monitors located indoors, which have a black circle around the colored dot on the map.

In addition to Oregon having a historically low snowpack, it has also had one of the driest 12 month periods on its record. Since last April, Oregon has recorded its 5th lowest amount of precipitation received since 1895.

After this cooler & wetter interlude, there are once again strong signals than anomalous April warmth will dominate the West for much of rest of April. It won't be as extreme as March, relatively speaking, but return of warmth & dryness will likely allow rapid snowmelt to resume.
Map depicting ECMWF ensemble predicted temperature anomalies for mid-April across the American West. Widespread anomalous warmth is again depicted, with some regions again more than 10-15 degrees F above seasonal norms.

NWS Weather Prediction Center: The early season western #heatwave is well under way. Here are monthly high temperature records for March set over the past two days. Future daily temperature records can be found here: www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/exper/ndfd/n...
Map of the western United States showing March maximum temperature records set March 17–18, 2026. Dots mark cities with record highs, color-coded by temperature: yellow (74–79°F), light orange (80–89°F), darker orange (90–99°F), and red (100–106°F). Numerous records are plotted across California, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, with the hottest values in the desert Southwest, including Palm Springs (106°F), Yuma (103°F), Phoenix (102°F), and Needles (101°F). Pardon my french, but this forecast is fucking absurd. Parts of San Francisco could legitimately flirt with 90 degrees Monday and Tuesday, which would shatter the March record (87F). The city's earliest 90-degree reading is April 6, same with Oakland, in 1989 and 2016, respectively.

The official NOAA stats out this week confirm that winter 2025-26 was the warmest on record across a huge portion of the western and central U.S., which has contributed to extremely low mountain snowpack & worsened the CO River crisis. Meanwhile, record March heat is in forecast.
Official map from NOAA depicting the relative rank of winter 2025-2026 temperatures at a county level across the contiguous U.S. Many counties in the western and central U.S. are depicted in dark red color, signifying record-warmest winter. All other counties in the west and central U.S. are depicted in dark orange colors, signifying a "near record warm" rank.

Whew. All signs are increasingly pointing to a significant, if not strong to very strong, El Niño event. I'll have more to say in coming weeks & months, but for now I'll just say that this is increasingly likely to become a major regional-to-global climate driver in 2026-2027.
Time series plot depicting predicted Nino 3.4 region ocean temperature anomalies from the latest (Mar 2026) ECMWF ensemble. It depicts an extremely rapid rise in such temperatures, from modest negative anomalies to strong positive anomalies, by mid-summer 2026--indicative of a transition from weak-moderate La Nina conditions to moderate-strong El Nino conditions over just a few months.

The text says that in a country that amended its Constitution to ban alcohol and later reversed it, the U.S. could also pass an amendment clarifying that corporations are not people and money is not speech.
