In other words, taking the David Richardson approach of "I'll run everyone over" was a choice for Hamilton's first big move as FEMA administrator. As I've said all along -- he is not the hero of emergency management. bsky.app/profile/saml...

I haven't seen any news coverage yet of Cameron Hamilton's announcement that he has re-defined the entire field of emergency management to include only preparedness and response activities related to coordinating police, fire, and EMS. Seems like something that should get some attention.

Dangerous flooding risks move out of the Desert Southwest and into the Plains today as tropical moisture streams in. With up to 6 inches of rain, considerable flood impacts are possible. Avoid travelling through flooded or vulnerable areas, and remember to #TurnAroundDontDrown

Fay and Hanna have dissipated, and the Atlantic will be quiet for a week or so, then the long-range models begin hinting at something brewing in the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico. If this ends up developing into the ninth named storm, the next name on the list is Isaias.

Wednesday El Niño update - The explanation for why SSTs are still at record high levels in the Niño 3.4 region is because of both climate change + El Niño. Far-reaching ENSO teleconnections are more dependent on temperature gradients, & relative SSTs are actually more similar to other strong events.
Line graph time series of daily sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region. Years are shown from 1982 to 2025 in shades of blue to light yellow, and 2026 is shown in red. Climatologically, the largest anomalies are during the boreal winter in terms of magnitude. Data is from OISSTv2.1. Art x Climate is an integral part of the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5), restored by Climate.us. #SciArt #ClimateForUs One of the featured artworks is “Grinnell Mt. Gould Quadtych” by Diane Burko. Year and Medium: 2009, oil on canvas
This work portrays Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park, Montana in four time periods between 1920 and 2006, with the glacier losing mass in each painting. The piece considers the marks that humanity leaves on the landscape, reflecting the impact of industrial and colonial activity on those same landscapes. While these paintings deal with impending climate catastrophe, rather than lingering in dystopia they celebrate the sublimity of the landscape by honoring the intricate geological and political webs that shape the identity of a place.
