At Deerhurst, a kitchen in the nave and a bedroom in the chancel concealed an Anglo-Saxon chapel built in 1056 by a kinsman of Edward the Confessor. Rediscovered in 1865, it had survived hidden in plain sight - a thousand-year thread absorbed into an ordinary home.

You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while. Why? Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year. Deal? 1/15 #bees

#theBeeAt3 Basic bee facts every day at 3pm. 40. 80% of solitary bee species are mining bees. They nest in the ground. To do this they must have access to bare soil. Help them - scrape back some soil/build a mound - south facing. And never use pesticides. Ever…ever! 🐝 #bees #nature

Just a few of at least 100 Common Carder bumblebees (Bombus pascuorum) I saw this afternoon in our garden, including some still collecting pollen. This species is one of the last to remain active, before their mated queens go into hibernation when the temperatures drop…

From about 30 minutes before sunrise the colour in the sky was glowing on the trees in the lane here in Glastonbury. The colour then developed over the next 40 minutes with the most beautiful golden sunrise from the top of the Tor. All in order they were taken today.

Good morning - I hope you slept like a shrimp-stuffed cuttlefish - I'm starting with Samuel Bough's gloriously golden 'Entrance to Cadzow Park', oil on canvas, 1859. Available as a single greetings card, or as part of the Summer Collection. www.rathergoodart.co.uk/product/samu... #greetingscard
A sunken lane leading in to Cadzow Park. In the doorway of a rustic dwelling a man smokes a pipe, a dog relaxing at his feet. On the right a curious cow.

This afternoon, I returned to my studio with less energy than I’d hoped. And then I noticed… Wildflowers drifting into seed — downy parachutes taking breath. Beyond, goldfinches descend into the meadow, tickling the sky, making the air itself giggle. I simply sit a while. Listening. Noticing.

Bumblebees can only fly for 40 minutes between feeds. So growing just one nectar-rich plant could be the pit-stop that saves a bee. Helping bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators is also a great way to connect with nature! More ideas: littlegreenspace.org.uk/features/con...

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell c. 500,000-300,000 years ago! From West Tofts, Norfolk 📷 MAA Cambridge University collections.maa.cam.ac.uk/objects/4509... #Archaeology
The photo shows a Lower Paleolithic Acheulean biface handaxe knapped from dark grey flint with a creamy-white cortical layer, shown against a black background. The handaxe is roughly tear-drop shaped with a pointed tip and rounded bottom. There is a fossil shell centrally displayed on one face, identified as the Cretaceous bivalve mollusc Spondylus spinosus. Above the shell to the right is a small rectangular museum label. Likely made by an early neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) population or an alternative Middle Pleistocene hominin species (H. heidelbergensis s.l.). The toolmaker has knapped the flint in such a way as to seemingly retain the shell in a central position. The shell’s central display has often been described as an example of aesthetic intention by the toolmaker. A recent study (“The West Tofts handaxe: A remarkably average, structurally flawed, utilitarian biface” by Emily Flanders and Alastair Key) concluded it was likely ‘an average utilitarian tool’ in the eyes of its Acheulean maker, and that the aesthetic intent is assumed by the present-day beholder, and not supported by objective evidence.

Measurements 79mm x 35mm x 132mm. Weight 0.375kg.

Collections of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge.
