Noticing Nature. This morning, the meadow seemed woven with light. Spiders’ webs glittered between grasses and stems as the sun found them. I’ve spent so much time lately thinking about threads that waking to a meadow full of them felt like a gift. clothofnature.com/2026/09/27/w...

Noticing Nature. A sleepy bee amongst the sedum, gathering nectar with the last of the day’s energy. I recognised something of myself in her. Sleepy too, bumbling about a bit… but purposefully, in my own way. Still noticing. Still making. Still seeking what nourishes me. #NoticingNature
A sleepy-looking bumblebee nestles amongst a mass of tiny pink sedum flowers, its soft grey-brown body slightly hunched as it continues to forage for nectar.

Noticing Nature. I’ve spent every ounce of energy on this anniversary adventure — perhaps borrowing a little from tomorrow too. So I sat on a sun-warmed rock beside the River Swale, balancing pebbles and listening to the water slip by. For a while, everything held. #YorkshireDales

Four smooth river pebbles carefully balanced one upon another on a broad grey rock beside the River Swale, with the river winding away between the green hills of Swaledale beneath a soft blue-grey sky.
Jane sitting quietly on a sun-warmed rock beside the River Swale, surrounded by river stones and the green hills of Swaledale, absorbed in balancing pebbles and enjoying a still moment within the landscape.

Yesterday, we came upon this magnificent hawthorn, its ancient branches laden with scarlet haws. Its beauty, age and presence in that remote Swaledale landscape engendered a sense of reverence — a life standing quietly in that place through seasons beyond counting. #WildflowerHour #fruits
An old hawthorn laden with scarlet haws standing amongst dry-stone walls in a remote Swaledale valley, beneath an immense blue September sky scattered with white clouds.”
A closer view of the magnificent spreading hawthorn, its gnarled branches smothered in scarlet haws, glowing against the green hillsides and deep blue sky of Swaledale.

The night sky has settled over the hills and dales at the close of another wonderful day. Over Buttertubs Pass into Swaledale, then on to Muker, where we followed the River Swale towards Keld — a piece of Swaledale cheese in our rucksack and love in our hearts. #YorkshireDales #RiverSwale #Muker
A collage from a day walking in Swaledale: weathered wooden gates and dry-stone walls opening onto sweeping green hills; the River Swale tumbling over stones and winding through the dale beneath great billowing clouds; and, finally, Neil and me together high above the valley, smiling into the camera with the vast Yorkshire landscape behind us.

Up hill and down dale… Today we followed the River Aire from Airton to Malham Cove, celebrating twenty years of marriage. Stepping through life together, sometimes finding our way through difficult terrain, yet so often stopped in our tracks by its beauty and wonder. Still hand in hand.
A collage from our anniversary walk through Malhamdale. Neil and I smile together beneath the limestone cliffs of Malham Cove, surrounded by views from our walk along the River Aire: green rolling dales beneath a dramatic sky, a leafy woodland path, the river winding through the landscape and the great pale limestone face of the Cove.

This evenings #WildflowerHour challenge is #seedheads. Making this meadow mandala slowed me down, each seedhead asking to be closely noticed before finding its place. I cherish seedheads as much as flowers. A flower speaks of the moment; a seedhead holds the future. #Meadow #NoticingNature
A circular mandala carefully arranged from seedheads gathered in our meadow on a soft grey background. Wild carrot, willowherb, knapweed, hogweed and other dried stems radiate from a central seedhead, surrounded by papery pink-purple honesty seedpods and tiny seeds. The meadow seedhead mandala viewed at a slight angle, annotated in my handwritten script with arrows identifying honesty, knapweed, wild carrot, agrimony, hogweed, hawkbit, willowherb and corky-fruited water-dropwort.

Noticing Nature. I have noticed less this week. Though that isn’t quite true. Through blurred vision, wildflowers bloomed despite the austerity. Willowherb drifted into seed, echoing my own journey. Clouds performed between showers. This morning, a rainbow. clothofnature.com/2026/08/29/n...

For the first time in so long, it rained this morning. At ten, during the drought of 1976, I danced in the rain when it finally fell. Today, less exuberantly, I watched raindrops dance on leaves instead. Then touched my tongue to one… just to see if I could taste the magic. #NoticingNature

Noticing Nature. Five summers ago, a dock beetle gleamed jewel-bright in its exquisite claw setting — the hooked seeds of herb bennet. This summer, fierce sun and drought have turned the plants to seed. Almost all claws now. The photograph still dazzles. But the emeralds are harder to find.
A close-up photograph of a tiny dock beetle nestled amongst the hooked seed head of herb bennet. Its smooth metallic body gleams an extraordinary emerald green against the warm brown, claw-like seeds curling around it. The beetle appears almost jewel-set within the intricate structure of the plant.

This afternoon, I returned to my studio with less energy than I’d hoped. And then I noticed… Wildflowers drifting into seed — downy parachutes taking breath. Beyond, goldfinches descend into the meadow, tickling the sky, making the air itself giggle. I simply sit a while. Listening. Noticing.

A window on my world, from my drawing desk. Morning light slips between the bottles on the studio sill, illuminating feathers, shells, sea-washed pebbles, seeds and small treasures gathered along the way. Things noticed, valued, and woven into my work. Beyond the glass, our wonderful wilds.
Sunlit studio window viewed from a drawing desk. The black-painted sill is crowded with glass bottles and jars holding feathers, shells, seeds, thread, and other small natural treasures. Warm morning light shines through the glass, with leafy trees and the wild garden at Madrigal visible beyond.

Yesterday, the Daisy family gathered together. Tonight, one of them has stepped out to dance. Bellis perennis — the common lawn daisy — transformed into a tiny fairy from petals, stems and found fragments. #DaisyFairy #BellisPerennis #NatureArt #NoticingNature #ClothOfNature
A delicate handmade fairy figure created from dried natural materials and balanced on a spool of pale lilac silk thread. Her body is formed from slender brown stems, with a dried seed head for her head, narrow curved plant fragments raised like arms, and faded mauve-and-white daisy petals forming a skirt and collar. Handwritten mauve text beside her reads “Bellis perennis — The Daisy Fairy”, with Jane E. Hall’s initials in the lower right corner.

Meet our extended family… the Daisy family. A wildflower array of the Asteraceae still blooming here at Madrigal despite drought and relentless heat — yellow, white, purple, prickly, feathery and thistle-down soft. Different weather. The same wonderfully sprawling family #WildflowerHour #DaisyFamily
Botanical-style wildflower array arranged on handmade white paper and titled ‘The Daisy Family ~ Madrigal August 2026’. Individual stems gathered from the meadow are laid out and handwritten labels identify Bristly Oxtongue, Nipplewort, Fleabane, Daisy, Hawkbit, Ragwort, Noble Yarrow, Sneezewort, Field Thistle, Oxeye Daisy, Knapweed and Chicory. Yellow, white, purple and blue flowers mingle with seed heads, feathers, butterfly cocoons, a bumblebee, peacock butterfly wing and colourful snail shells — small treasures gathered among the flowers.

Today, my energy seems to have evaporated, like the water in our drought-shallowed ponds. Perhaps I’m carrying debt from the 58½ miles we walked in Stockholm. Bodies are rarely obliging enough to provide itemised invoices. Neither cancels out the other. I’d happily go into debt all over again. 🇸🇪

Back home, moving more like a snail than the swifts I remember reeling above Stockholm. After podiatry and a stroll across sun-baked Martin Down, I drifted back to Sweden — cool lakes, harebells, giant snails. A silvery trail of memory, waiting to be retraced. #Sweden #NoticingNature
Alt text: Three-image collage from the Swedish countryside: purple harebells trembling among tall grasses; an unusually large, softly striped snail shell resting against lichen-covered rock; and a small still-life of the shell with pine cones, juniper and pale branching lichen gathered during our stay.

We walked 58½ miles through Stockholm, hand in hand. Neil walks on my right, the side on which I cannot hear, and shares his balance. Travelling can be disorientating, and my energy can dip unexpectedly. Adventure isn’t measured only in miles, but in knowing when to pause—and who walks beside you.
Jane and Neil smiling together in a leafy Stockholm park. Neil is wearing a white linen shirt, while Jane wears a dark floral dress. Sunlight filters through the trees behind them, creating a peaceful green backdrop. The couple are standing close together, clearly enjoying their time exploring the city.

Noticing Nature. It was the eye that captured me: burnished copper, steady and watchful, as this magnificent little toad made for the pond. I caught the hop and jump, just missing a splendid backwards flip over a stone. For a moment, we truly noticed one another. A princess in waiting. 😊 #Toad

Each summer, keeled garlic rises from the thin, alkaline Mendip limestone of our Fairy House roof. Its deep purple bells bow gently, while long papery bracts trail behind them like tiny comet tails — once wrapped tightly around the flower buds, protecting them before they opened. #WildflowerHour
A four-image collage of keeled garlic (Allium carinatum) growing on the Fairy House roof at Madrigal. Close-up photographs reveal elegant clusters of deep purple, nodding flowers with long papery bracts that stream behind them like tiny comet tails. A wider view shows the remarkable habitat they call home: a shallow layer of alkaline Mendip limestone, carpeted with mosses and sedums and surrounded by tall, sun-bleached grasses during the summer drought. One of the quiet botanical treasures of our restored landscape.

I seem to have been away with the fairies again… This time, I think they’ve been Swedish. They’ve been quietly coaxing me towards our adventure. Suitcases don’t pack themselves, apparently. I’ll be back to my usual Noticing Nature soon… perhaps with a little Swedish enchantment to share. 🇸🇪🦋
A photograph taken from my point of view while sitting beside our wildlife pond at Madrigal. Resting on my knees is An Illustrated Treasury of Swedish Folk and Fairy Tales by John Bauer, its cover filled with beautifully illustrated trolls gathered around a luminous fairy. The softly blurred pond and summer greenery beyond echo the enchanted woodland scenes, as I prepare for our upcoming journey to Sweden.

If there is such a thing as stardust, perhaps there is sundust too. A Small Copper’s shimmer is born of microscopic scales catching the light. Yet it still feels as though something more is quietly at work. Golden dust in flower hearts. Warmth kindling ember-bright wings. I believe in sundust.

Always look on the bright side of life 🎶 Bath was dazzlingly beautiful today—perhaps a little too dazzling. A migraine gently manoeuvred us back beneath an old oak tree. We shared a picnic. Treated a hypo. Neil’s hand in mine. The bright side of life, it turns out, was the shady side 🌳
Four photographs from a sunny day in Bath. Neil and I picnic beneath the shade of an old oak after retreating from the city because of a migraine and a hypo. A wide view across the park contrasts bright sunshine with cool shade. The final photograph shows us visiting Sulis on our journey home.

Rather than trying to photograph all 61 wildflower species blooming here today, I thought I’d share a few of the flowers the butterflies chose instead… A Silver-washed fritillary on Greater knapweed, a Clouded yellow on Fleabane and a Small copper on Ragwort. 🦋🌼🦋 #WildflowerHour #NoticingNature

Sleeping green-veined white. At 6am, still fast asleep beneath bramble leaf sheets before the sun climbed high. I often wonder what butterflies dream of—cuckooflowers, perhaps. Or rain. #GreenVeinedWhite #Butterflies #NoticingNature #WildlifeGarden #ClothOfNature
A green-veined white butterfly sleeps in bramble leaves in the early morning. Away from my drawing desk for a few days, enjoying friends visiting from Germany, I woke early and wandered into my studio. Morning light was drawing with shadows across my desk. It left me wondering whether my desk has an imagination too. Perhaps, like me, it daydreams. Back soon. 🤍
Sunlight streams through a studio window onto a wooden drawing desk, casting delicate shadows of a dream catcher, dried stems and seedheads across the surface. Bottles, jars, feathers, notes and small natural treasures line the windowsill, with green trees glowing softly outside.

Today, the shade beneath the oaks feels like a sanctuary. Bird baths topped up. Fresh water for thirsty wild-kin. The ornamental toad seems to approve, inviting the thirsty to stop by. If you can, leave a shallow dish of water somewhere safe and shady. The smallest kindness can mean everything.

Retreating to the shade, I found myself counting trees. Like counting sheep, it proved impossible. I soon lost count and drifted off to sleep. Not because I forget, but because there are so many. What began as a labour of love has grown beyond our counting. And somehow that adds up perfectly.
