Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

We live in a society that punishes people who are assaulted. We question them, we shame them, we disbelieve them. Many survivors instinctively do that societal work for us. Survivors question themselves, they shame themselves, they don't believe their own version of events. We've trained them!

Super interesting research validating the perspective that, to make housing affordable and let people live where they want, we need to both build way more housing and build in protections for current tenants of neighborhoods ripe for gentrification.

Newly published housing research! We find that the effects of new construction on rents varies by the quality of the existing housing. In the first 5 years rents went up 4.4% near low quality buildings and went down 1.7% near high quality buildings (1/x) 🧵 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Build baby build? Housing submarkets and the effects of new
construction on existing rents

Anthony Damiano and Chris Frenier
aUniversity of Minnesota; bHealth Care Cost Institute
ABSTRACT
There is vigorous debate among scholars, and activists about the role that new market-rate apartments play in alleviating housing affordability issues at the neighborhood level. This study evaluates how new large (>50 units)
market-rate apartment buildings affect rents in nearby buildings. In contrast to other recent work, we posit that the effects of new construction may vary by the quality of existing housing. We test this hypothesis by using a panel of building-level rents from Minneapolis, Minnesota, observed between 2000
and 2018. While we find no effect of new high-end housing on the market overall, we find countervailing effects of new construction on different parts of the rental market when broken out separately. We find that lower-priced rental housing close to new construction had rents 4.4% higher than those in
other low-quality buildings farther away in the first 5 years after new construction. In contrast, we find that new construction had the opposite effect on higher-priced housing: rents were 1.7% lower near new construction. This study reiterates the importance of housing submarket theory and how focusing solely on average effects of housing interventions may miss important and nuanced effects across different parts of the market.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Still very relevant broadly on AI, theory, data are the 3 traps here by @kjhealy.co (2017). Fuck nuance. kieranhealy.org/files/papers... > Nuance is not a virtue of good sociological theory. Although often demanded [&] attractive, nuance inhibits the abstraction on which good theory depends.
Symposium: “What is Good Theorizing?”
Fuck Nuance
Kieran Healy1
Abstract
Nuance is not a virtue of good sociological theory. Although often demanded and
superficially attractive, nuance inhibits the abstraction on which good theory depends. I
describe three “nuance traps” common in sociology and show why they should be avoided
on grounds of principle, aesthetics, and strategy. The argument is made without prejudice
to the substantive heterogeneity of the discipline.
Keywords
theory, nuance, models, fuck
Nuance is not a virtue of good sociological theory. Sociologists typically use nuance as a
term of praise. Almost without exception, when nuance is mentioned it is because someone
is asking for more of it. I argue that, for the problems facing sociology at present, demanding
more nuance typically obstructs the development of theory that is intellectually interesting,
empirically generative, or practically successfulHowever, I do claim that the more we tend to value nuance as such—that is, as a virtue to
be cultivated, or as the first thing to look for when assessing arguments—the more we will
tend to slide toward one or more of three nuance traps. First is the ever more detailed, merely
empirical description of the world. This is the nuance of the fine-grain. It is a rejection of
theory masquerading as increased accuracy. Second is the ever more extensive expansion of
some theoretical system in a way that effectively closes it off from rebuttal or disconfirma-
tion by anything in the world. This is the nuance of the conceptual framework. It
Figure 1. Nuance in three sociology journals.
Healy 121
is an evasion of the demand that a theory be refutable. And third is the insinuation that a
sensitivity to nuance is a manifestation of one’s distinctive (often metaphorically expressed
and at times seemingly ineffable) ability to grasp and express the richness, texture, and flow
of social reality itself. This is the nuance of the connoisseur. It is mostly a species of self-
congratulatory symbolic violence.

Worth noting that the Title IX rules that were rescinded didn't include protections for trans student athletes, because Biden withdrew that part on his way out of office. That didn't stop McMahon from framing it that way though.
The Biden administration on Dec. 20 withdrew a proposed rule that would have extended Title IX protections to transgender student athletes, acknowledging that public sentiment and legal challenges made finalizing the rule too difficult.“It’s exactly how we enforce Title IX,” McMahon said in a video released over the weekend. “It was boys in boys sports and girls in girls sports, and now the Biden rules and regulations are being rescinded and it is a full return to the Trump administration’s Title IX ruling, as has been upheld by many courts.”
