Everyone needs to work together to pop this bubble asap. If you have control over your stock portfolio, pull out of every company mentioned in the article (though it's impossible to be safe from second- and third-order effects) www.wheresyoured.at/the-subprime...
Screenshot from the link: "What’s most horrifying is that OpenAI and Anthropic don’t even have to die for this all to end horribly. For one company to be able to afford even $200 billion a year in AI-related operating expenses is ludicrous.

Microsoft, a company that makes about $318 billion a year in revenue, has about $169 billion of operating expenses a year, and that includes the cost of running OpenAI’s compute. The idea that we’re going to have multiple Microsofts-worth of opex entirely focused on AI compute in the next four years is absolutely fucking ridiculous, yet it’s one of the most commonly-held beliefs in the tech industry."

For when you need some political philosophy and investigative journalism to go with your recommendations on which gasmasks to buy, @sarahjeong.bsky.social never disappoints www.theverge.com/policy/86857...
/What is tear gas for?/ It is for inciting riots. /How did people go out and get gas masks?/ They ordered them online, because they do not want to riot.

Baker also makes clear that the entrepreneurial work ethic solves a problem created by capitalism, or at least, pushes it into the future. “The idea that creating work, for oneself and for others, was not just feasible for any given individual but an expression of a person’s unique talents and creative potential neatly resolved the contradiction between the imperative to work under capitalism and the scarcity of work created by its advanced corporate form.”

Moroccan director Belabbes suggested the AI’s growing influence in the filmmaking and wider creative sphere was a new form of colonialism.

“The models they use in AI don’t belong to me. They’re not mine. I have to create my own worlds… otherwise it’s just a new form of colonialism. It’s the whitewashing of our heritage,” he said.

In case you've been feeling like google search doesn't work anymore (for years now), no it's not just you. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
"Google’s indifference is unsurprising," Mehta wrote. "In 2020, Google conducted a quality degradation study, which showed that it would not lose search revenue if were to significantly reduce the quality of its search product. Just as the power to raise price 'when it is desired to do so' is proof of monopoly power, so too is the ability to degrade product quality without concern of losing consumers."

This isn’t new. There’s a long history of jokes as subversion, gallows humor as protest. But there’s something uniquely modern about the way assassination “discourse” has become, for lack of a better word, ambient. Not quite satire. Not quite sedition. A feeling. A refusal to say what you mean, because meaning things can actually be dangerous.

There's so much going on between the lines here. Make benches comfy again!
Designing one bench, as it turned out, was not enough. He began planning another. He figured out the contours by comparing all the benches in the Golden Gate Park; “The average wasn’t comfortable!” he said. After several versions, he settled on what he called “the off the wall” bench: A shape with slightly angled seat and backrest, which allows sitters to shift back and forth, prompting better posture. “I like to think they’re comfortable for everyone,” he said.

"Objectivity" is a deceit. It always has been. It's the lie we tell ourselves and each other in order to smuggle our biases ,unanalyzed, through the door.
Snippet from Dubois's article: Journalism that leaves its own behind must take a hard inward look, but is anyone expendable for the sake of some “objectivity” that enables real harm? If you agree with the employee guidelines that say /journalists have no place on the playing field of politics/, answer this: Can you name anything important that isn’t political?

If you or your group are able to cordon off politics from the rest of your daily life, you might have unexamined privilege.

Given the distribution of the allele, i can't help but wonder if this is another thing we can thank Neanderthals for— especially given how many other immune system things we got from them
World map of the current distribution of CCR5-delta32 allele. Shows concentrations: highest in Scandinavia and central/western Russia; moderate in northern europe; some throughout northern africa, middle east, and western india; low/none in central/southern africa, asia, australia, americas.

The idea of "law" has always been the central weapon of colonialism. Since the very beginning we have always used it to make ourselves feel superior and justified as we genocide and plunder. And if you think colonialism has ended, you need this book livingjusticepress.org/product/indi...
"[Charmaine White Face's] message forces us to ask the question: what happens when international law says powerful nations can use the idea of law as a weapon to gain consensus for theft? The so-called rule of law, as "discoverers" have shown us from the beginning, entrenches legal doctrines that justify genocide."
