Choose Your Own Constraint!

Hey hey, HADders! Lexi Rosen, here. While you can normally find me honking over at Silly Goose Press, Aaron and Crow were kind enough to pass over the keys to the skull pile this week and I can't wait to hand some out! I am SO excited to read your very best, RULE FOLLOWING pieces. I'm interested in constraints, patterns, syllables, rhyme schemes — whatever rules you've decided to follow are fair game for this call. Prose and poetry are welcome, but know that I prefer flash fiction and poems that can stick to one-ish page, and let's limit page counts to 3-5ish. That said, I care way more about the rules you're choosing to follow than the ones I lay out for you. Pretty please with a cherry on top let me know on a separate page (the last page, if possible!) of your attached submission document what rules and parameters you've decided to set (ie, I didn't use the letter E throughout the piece, I only wrote in haiku, every third word is an onomatopoeia, I had to use the word canteloup at least twice, etc), and feel free to include something about why, if you wanna — I love a craft choice and would love even more to hear about your process.

"The Grief Shop is nothing less than a triumph over the worst in and of us", says @wrefinnej.bsky.social in their new interview with @alessandrostardust.bsky.social for @bombmag.bsky.social bombmagazine.org/articles/202...
"Yet through the dystopia of The Grief Shop runs a deep vein of humanity, and social media also has that vein: friendships can blossom there, and I consider Alex a friend. What I admire in Alex, I admire in their writing. Alex’s body of work, which includes two memoirs, a novel, and a previous story collection, shines with moral clarity while grappling with the complexity of existing in this broken world. Alex put this moral clarity into practice after the 2024 election, when they quit a dream job in protest of their publisher employer’s new ultra-right-wing imprint—an act that came at great financial and personal cost. Yet they, like their characters, carry on, and Alex’s art continues to thrive: The Grief Shop is nothing less than a triumph over the worst in and of us."

People are right to be incensed, but there are more names to uplift. ICE killed an immigrant man named Silverio Villegas González in Chicagoland. He had children. Victor Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Minneapolis and died in ICE custody on January 14. Their names deserve to be repeated, too.
