Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

We could really use Carl Sagan right about now… #books #reading #history #libraries
A quote from the great Carl Sagan “One glace at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for a 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.”

we remain in a very strange era of describing human emotions as their chemical compounds (serotonin, dopamine, cortisol) in a similar way that stories and art have been reduced to corporate buzzwords (content, IP, franchise)

It's behind a paywall but Library Journal said this of THREE HITMEN AND A BABY: "Ridiculously funny and surprisingly touching... The best of the series so far. Both newcomers and returning readers will root for these former assassins as they try to reform themselves." Good start to the day.

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing. All from his movies.

Rob Reiner made some great movies but he was also unafraid to speak the truth, and was one of the public voices who knew you don’t squander your platform, and only got louder about opposing evil fucks as he got older. Legend.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

Whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams accuses Meta of colluding with China
Sarah Wynn-Williams, Facebook’s former Head of Global Public Policy, testified before the U.S. Senate today about the company’s relationship with China. According to Wynn-Williams, the company now known as Meta worked directly with the Chinese Community Party (CCP) to “undermine U.S. national security and betray American values,” she said. She alleges that Facebook created custom-built […]

There is a very real legal argument to make about whether training AI with established works constitutes Fair Use under the law. That’s for the courts and Congress to decide. But Meta pirated millions of books without paying. And that, my friends, is not up for debate. That’s several million crimes

41. 41 works stolen. My words, my time, my passion, my pain, my trauma, my joy, my thoughts. I would never consent to feed my art to the AI machine, not at any price. I hate it, and I condemn it, and I wish they'd get sued into the ground.
Delilah searched the LibGen database and found that 41 of her works had been illegally pirated by the Meta AI machine against her will. She's pretty pissed and continues to believe that AI should not be used for art.

Coping with the *gestures vaguely* I’ve watched a number of great shows lately, that are all timers. Pantheon S1 - all time favorite animated show. Holy shit. Invincible S3 - proved itself to be my favorite season so far, despite a rushed storyline or two Fallen (2024) - soooooo goooooood.
