This year I've finally bitten the bullet and begun looking at whitebeams. Earlier this week it was the turn of the Menai Strait Whitebeam (Sorbus arvonicola) - easily separated from Sorbus aria at the same site by the grey leaf undersides (comparison in the last photo). @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Sorbus arvonicola leaves at the top of the photo, greyer than the Sorbus aria leaves below.

The Unionists/Loyalist are refusing to face reality & are triumphalist. These guys refused to sign the GFA Peace treaty & their associated paramilitaries refused to give up their arms. One side made big changes for peace & the other refused to even engage. There are a lot of drugs involved too.

This is an interesting point that has come up in our Local Nature Recovery Strategy: If you start post Enclosure (circa 1600-1650 in Tees Valley) then your story now is loss of hedgerows. Start before & the loss is of wetlands and massive amounts of grassland/grazing moor; hedges are irrelevant.

I think this is an Indigofera, possibly I. heterantha (a form of?). In Zetland Park at Redcar, so a bit milder being by the sea and sandy soil. Someone, probably in the 70's or early 80's chose some interesting plants.

Would you recognise the same mushroom twice? You might not with the Blackening Waxcap. But why is that? Well, the clue is in the name! Take a look at the photos to find out more 👉 📸 Thumbnail: Keilidh Ewan
Graphic featuring a Blackening Waxcap mushroom (Hygrocybe conica). A small orange, cone-shaped mushroom with a pale stem grows among green grass and low vegetation, photographed with a shallow depth of field that creates a soft, blurred background. White text at the top reads “Blackening Waxcap” and “Hygrocybe conica”. A yellow label in the bottom-left corner reads “Fungi Friday!”, and a white arrow on the right indicates this is part of a carousel post.

Many ponds here are still dry. This one at Hartburn didn't look too promising, choked with invasive Curly Waterweed, but it was full of dragonfly larvae. At this time of year these are predominantly hawkers (Aeshnidae), which have multi-year life-cycles. @teesbirds.bsky.social

My back garden (SW-facing) used to be unbearable on sunny days (it hit 40°C in 2022, despite being too far north for an official record). Hedges planted along the fences, and climbers all over the house and garage walls. Massive difference. Still hot, but bearable.
