👀 Spotted this week at Low Barns Nature Reserve: 🐉 The male migrant hawker likes to hang - often at eye height - from bushes, making then easy to observe closely. 🐉 The male common darter is very common at this time of year, basking in the sun on places like paths and fence posts. 📷 Caitlin Elwin
A split image comparing two dragonfly species photographed at Low Barns Nature Reserve. The left photo shows a male migrant hawker perched on a reed, displaying a blue‑and‑brown patterned abdomen and transparent wings. The right photo shows a male common darter resting on a stone surface, with a reddish‑orange body and clear wings. Text labels identify each species, and logos for Durham Wildlife Trust and photographer Caitlin Elwin appear on the image.

Our team and volunteers have been hard at work at Joe’s Pond recently. 🌳 Taking out the trees that have grown between the main pond and its filter ponds, to prevent the areas becoming too dry and ensuring the flow of water. 🪚 The trees were cut and removed by hand. Hard work! 📷 Alex Swainston 1/2

A close-up of a brown-and-white owl perched on a weathered wooden post. The owl’s head is tilted slightly, showing its large yellow eyes and dark pupils. Its talons grip the post, which has rough texture and bits of lichen. A strand of barbed wire runs near the bottom right, and the blurred green-brown background suggests a natural outdoor setting.
