IDK the history of metagames, but a fun instance is Stump the Stars (May 6, 1963), where Beverly Garland uses Charades to represent Charades given "Charader: That Little Old Sign Maker, Me"--an allusion to a wine ad jingle. Her team gets it but mentions The Game wobbupalooza.neocities.org/charades

In July 1893, Borderland magazine tried to form the Borderland Circle, an association of psychic / occult investigators organized under rules & procedures that read just like a 'horror by gaslight' RPG campaign document. They even hoped to build an occult library babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nj...
Long excerpt from _Borderland_ magazine, v. 1, n. 1 (1893). The first five paragraphs say ...

BORDERLAND is published in order to promote the intelligent observation of the phenomena of the Borderland and their record at a common centre, where the records would be readily accessible, and to
enable the humblest and most inexperienced student to make himself informed of the conclusions arrived atby the wisest, both as to the best method of research, and as to the most probable of the various hypotheses which are suggested as affording clues to the heart of the mystery.

All our readers may be said to belong in one sense to the Circle ofthe students of Borderland; but if the study is to be prosecuted intelligently and systematically, it will be necessary to enrol all real students in a specially enrolled membership, to be called the Borderland Circle . Such member, on application for admission, must contribute the sum of three shillings per annum for defraying postage and other charges, and must undertake to co-operate in helping his fellow-students to prosecute their studies to the best advantage. The following is a
rough draft of the suggested rules and regulations of Borderland :-

RULES AND REGULATIONS.

(1). Each member shall be a subscriber to BORDERLAND, which will act as a quarterly organ of the Circle and ameans of communication between the members.

(2). Each member, on applying for enrolment, to subscribe three shillings per annum for the expenses of the Circle, and to undertake to conform to the rules and regulations laid down for the guidance of the students.

(3). It is free to each member to select which of the sub-circles of special subjects he wishes to study; but if he joins more than one, he must pay three shillings for each sub-circle in which he is enrolled.

one page. header reads "RPG DESIGNER THEORYSLOP ALIGNMENT CHARTS & SHEET." gray text under the header reads "You have 20 points to assign to each stat array, Pendragon-style. For tri- or otherwise multi-polar arrays, express the stats as ranges, e.g. “Gamist 1–7 / Dramatist 8–9 / Simulationist 10–20.”
subheaders followed by lines for writing read: "Designer: / Project: / Link:"
subheader reads "Binary Traits," followed by a list of silly game studies paired descriptors and space to write stats: "Ludologist / Narratologist // Game-as-Activity / Game-as-Object // Proceduralist / Anti-Proceduralist // Diegetic / Endogenous // Suitsian / Non-Suitsian // Closed Lusory Goal / Open Lusory Goal // Toy-Game / Meta-Game // Character-Locked / Authorial // Problem-Solving / Story-Telling // Rulebooks / Adventures."
subheader reads "Special Twinned Binary Traits (the Bartle Zone)," followed by gray text reading "Assign 20 points to each axis, but make a single roll when testing the combined traits." following is a two-axis chart, north-south reading "Social / Non-Social" and west-east reading "Aggressive / Passive."
in the second column, a subheader reads "Multi-Polar Traits" followed by shapes with stats at their corners: triangle, "Dramatist / Gamist / Simulationist"; square, "Agon / Alea / Mimicry / Ilinx"; hexagon, "Classic / OSR / Trad / Nordic larp / Neotrad / Storygames"; square, "Gamer / Actor / Socialite / Immersive."
a subheader reads "Skills," followed by a big list of 32 skills, with space for stats next to each: Academia, Acting, Art Direction, Blog, Cartography, Copyediting, Credit Rating, Day Jon, Game Studies, Graphic Design, Illustration, Layout, Line Editing, Livestream, Marketing, Networking, Operations, Organizing, Podcast, Printing, Production, Proofreading, Shitpost, Shortform Video, Social Media, Thirst Trap, Video Essay, Web Dev, Writ. gray text reads "Sam Sorensen, September 2026"same theoryslop designer sheet as before, this time filled out in handwritten green, for me, Sam. I skew towards problem-solving, goal-driven play, as well as towards adventures, imaginary worlds, and simulationism. the notable inclusions in my skills lists are a +6 in game studies, a +4 in academic, blog, layout, line editing, and adventure-writing, and a +2 in "museum," my "other" skill

Scan of a hand-drawn title page that reads "The Delightful Tales of Fairy Land by J.E. Austen." The facing page is a little watercolor of hounds chasing a hare through a field near a tree. About 1,000 years ago, this ‘Tables’ game board was smashed up with an axe and thrown into a rubbish pit at Gloucester Castle! 🪓 😳 Ancient evidence perhaps of a sore loser!? 😂 Ironically it is the world’s oldest surviving complete tables set! Gloucester Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the circa 1,000 year-old Gloucester 'Tables' game set. The set consists of 24 obelisk-shaped bone strips with pointed ends, and a bone panel border, which were originally inlaid onto a wooden base which has not survived, together with thirty disc-shaped bone counters (not all shown in my photo). The bone inlays are decorated with carved interlace and ring-and-dot patterns. Each game counter is intricately carved and decorated with a human or animal figure. The tables set is displayed on a sandy surface in a museum display case at Gloucester Museum. Tables is an early version of backgammon. It is the oldest complete tables set in the world

Very cool to see this ... For comparison, Laura Valentine's 1870 board game "Naval Engagement" isn't exactly a first- or third-person shooter but an association between perspective and gameplay does some work in several of her games. CW for advertisements in it though: ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00026631/0...
Screenshot of a page in Laura Valentine's 1870 booklet _Home Games for Little Girls_. It is a picture, maybe an intaglio print, tinted with pale colors and captioned "Naval Engagement." The viewer has no avatar in the picture, but the picture positions them as an onlooker to a battle between a fort and a fleet of ships. It's as if the viewer is on an upper level of the fort, looking down at an angle and seeing 10 artillery crews firing cannons (numbered 3-12) toward 10 ships (also numbered 3-12; most have 3 tall masts but one has 2 masts and one is a steam-powered ironclad).

The rules of the game are at the front of the booklet: "Game of Naval Engagement - This picture represents a Naval Engagement. In the distance the Ships-of-war, Monitors, Gunboats, etc., are seen. In the foreground is a fortress manned by brave officers and gallant men. Two can play at this game; one will be the Admiral, and the other the General. The game is to be played with two dice; the highest throw opens fire. Count the spots on the two dice thrown. Place a button on the ship or gun whose number corresponds with the sum of the two dice thrown. Place the button on the ships when the fort fires, and on the guns of the fort when the ships fire. Continue until all of the ships are sunk or the guns of the fort are silenced. The one firing the last gun wins the battle. Double ones or double sixes silence Nos. 12. After a gun has been silenced or a ship sunk, if you throw the same number, it is a waste-ball or shot."

Anyone recognize the wargame "The Game of Empire" (ca. 1868)? I saw it while looking for old Treasure Hunt games. Seems like a chess variant like Venturini (1797), Richardson (1866), etc. but AFAIK Peterson, Pratesi, etc. don't mention it, maybe because it's not chess. www.google.com/books/editio...
Screenshot of a black-and-white diagram on page 275 in Henry Dalton (1868), _The Book of Drawing-Room Plays and Evening Amusements_. It shows a rectangular boardgame layout for a commercially-available game called "The Game of Empire." The board would be an 18x23 grid, except it seems to represent a peninsula with "sea" areas on either side, so its lower half has blank area around the peninsula with no squares drawn over the watery areas. However, two 3x3 grids on either side of the peninsula seem to represent staging areas with invading armies on the "seas," one described as having 9 blue pieces and one described as having 9 pink pieces (but actually shaded according to a legend at the bottom). There are also a few black squares representing fortified towns. The peninsular grid is maybe 20% filled in with many white pieces described as orange, plus maybe 9 "blue" and 8 "pink" pieces, but it's unclear what this shows. Is this a game in progress? Are these starting positions for a highly-asymmetric game? Or, most likely, do letters and numbers on the board situated beside each distinct set of deployed pieces indicate they are example configurations with corresponding rules to refer to? The configurations do not look random: they seem to suggest a game played like checkers, go, pente, or othello. Dalton says the game can be played as a 2-player "generalissimo" game where one player controls orange pieces and another the remaining pieces or as a 3+ "captain's" game where one player is blue, one is pink, and orange pieces go to one or more players. Dalton indicates pieces should be "taken" to win, and perhaps two small x symbols at the side of the board indicate captures are removed. He also says numbers should run around the edge of the board, serving as coordinates, but they are not pictured. Dalton says the rules are available with purchase of the game.

Screenshot of a map, ostensibly to pirate treasure, from Gladys Beattie Crozier's article "A Treasure Hunt" in a 1905 issue of The Girl's Realm magazine. Titled "Planne of Ye Hole Sho" (i.e. Plan of the Whole Show), the map is a 3/4 profile perhaps of someplace in the Shimla Hills in India. A prop supposedly used in an elaborate "Treasure Hunt" game there and inspiring further instances of it in England, it is lettered in a font like Fraktur, and its spelling is intentionally poor in an absurd, jokey way, similar to Nigel Molesworth's. Captions identify landmarks in the area and explain what they represent in the fictionalized pirate treasure scenario. References to "kanibles" connote a problematic worldview. A drawing of a skull fills the lower left corner of the map.

Ben Jonson's play Cynthia's Revels begins with three youngsters arguing over who gets to speak the prologue, and they draw lots. One of the losers then spoils the entire play's plot out of spite. Genius.
3 CHILD. Stay Jack: 'slid I'll do somewhat now afore I go in,
though it be nothing but to revenge myself on the author; since I
speak not his prologue, I'll go tell all the argument of his play

3 CHILD. [ADVANCING TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE.] First, the title
of his play is "Cynthia's Revels," as any man that hath hope to be
saved by his book can witness; the scene, Gargaphie, which I do
vehemently suspect for some fustian country; but let that vanish.
Here is the court of Cynthia whither he brings Cupid travelling on
foot, resolved to turn page. By the way Cupid meets with Mercury,
(as that's a thing to be noted); take any of our play-books without
a Cupid or a Mercury in it, and burn it for an heretic in poetry.
—[IN THESE AND THE SUBSEQUENT SPEECHES, AT EVERY BREAK, THE OTHER
TWO INTERRUPT, AND ENDEAVOUR TO STOP HIM.] Pray thee, let me
alone. Mercury, he in the nature of a conjurer, raises up Echo, who
