I think a lot about Gene Demby's NPR "code switch" piece on Maklemore performing "Thrift Shop" dressed as the worst stereotype of an antisemitic meme. It ends with a metaphor about "accidental" black face. www.npr.org/sections/cod...
We don't know what's going on here, and in the grand scheme of things, it's not all that serious. But it's another example of how context is what matters when we're metabolizing stuff like this. Sure, it's possible that he didn't realize that the nose, wig and beard — taken together with his performing a song about the joys of frugality — might converge into a kind of racist Voltron.

But that would be like frolicking through a fruit patch, tripping face-first into a dirt pit, and then emerging, dazed and face blackened, clutching a watermelon. Your story might in fact be legit, but so many things would have to go wrong in a particular order that you would kind of have to understand if no one believed you.

Remember, whenever you hear that a corporate law firm is "prestigious," you should interpret it the same way as "Trump is a successful businessman" and "Musk is a genius." It just means they're shameless and unscrupulous, like Sullivan & Cromwell. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
When Donald Trump Jr. was in India last November for a trip that included a wedding and a wildlife sanctuary tour, he made an unpublicized stop in the bustling city of Ahmedabad in the Western state of Gujarat.

The president’s son had a private meeting there with Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, whose namesake ports-to-energy conglomerate is headquartered in the city, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing the confidential conversation. The meeting, which hasn’t been previously reported, came around a year after US prosecutors accused the 63-year-old Adani Group chairman and his nephew Sagar Adani of orchestrating an alleged bribery scheme in India. They have consistently denied the charges, which the Department of Justice moved to drop last month.Led by Sullivan & Cromwell co-chair Robert Giuffra Jr., who is working as one of President Trump’s personal attorneys in a separate matter, Adani’s legal team attacked the indictment in private meetings with the Justice Department. The attorneys argued the case was flawed because it focused on conduct beyond the reach of US laws and lacked credible evidence of bribery, according to a person familiar with the conversations between lawyers involved in the matter.

The Main Event and the Sideshow
By Abe Greenwald
Donald Trump's absurd sideshows can land in different ways depending on what else he's doing.
When Trump is racking up policy wins, especially popular ones, it's easy enough to laugh off the vulgar displays.
At the start of his second term, for example, Trump immediately moved to secure the border and crackdown on radicalism at the institutional level.
Against those achievements, his decking out the Oval Office in gold leaf, while tacky and unfortunate, didn't rise to the level of a dire offense. And so long as the war in Iran was going well, I couldn't get that worked up over his towering arch project. Such things seem petty by comparison.
But when Trump is foundering on vital fronts, his indecorous sideshows become something much different-for example, when he throws a UFO birthday bash on the White House lawn while negotiating an American defeat at the hands of the Iranian regime. Here, the contrast between...

I could be convinced that "valuation" is inherently not something for regulation; okay, fine, even if it produces bubbles, crises, and misallocated capital. ... but the total absence of any governance or shareholder rights is just not something that should be allowed on public markets, period.
