"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Always funny when people get pissy about, of all things, *work to rule*. They are still doing their jobs, to the letter of the law in fact. That is causing problems is a serious indictment of how much extra people are expected to do in their job.

"Vaccines work" isn't a political statement. "Immigrants do not increase crime" isn't a political statement. "Climate change is real" isn't a political statement. "Genocide is bad" isn't a political statement. Stop neutralizing the power of facts by framing them as "politics." Reality matters.

Age bars are not a solution, but a symptom of refusing to accurately state a problem The problem is not that children are accessing addictive, harmful platforms that reward bullying and immiseration of their users It is that we are not stopping addictive, harmful platforms from exploiting everyone

Hackers Had A Live Feed Of Every ID This Verification Company Scanned. For Over A Year.
From the very beginning of this recent obsession with identifying everyone online (yes, they like to call it "age" verification, but it always ends up as identity verification), we've been pointing out that it was a huge privacy nightmare waiting to happen. Or maybe it wasn't waiting. Maybe it was already happening. This week a...

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

New rule. We don't get to use buildings as a measure of progress on homelessness. We already have more derelict/vacant buildings and empty short term lets than homeless people. The only acceptable metric for progress on homelessness is a reduction in homelessness figures #spéirgorm

The narrative of “x technology is here so you should not resist it” is one pushed only by the owners of that technology. A great many technologies which challenge power have been strangled in the crib by those same owners. Do not trust them and do not believe their lies.

Do many people know that the ICC judges, once sanctioned by the US, almost immediately lost access to credit cards, google, amazon & microsoft cloud, etc. www.ft.com/content/4c3a...
"In his role as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Guillou had issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Months earlier, some of his colleagues in the court had been similarly targeted by the US.

The shock was the reach of the sanctions. “It was not clear to us at that time the extent of disruption that it creates in our daily life,” Guillou says.

Within days, he was cut off from all the services that rely on US companies. He could not have an American credit card and instead had to rely on cash and national payment systems such as iDEAL in the Netherlands for online transactions.

Wire transfers bounced back. His hotel reservations on Booking.com and Expedia were cancelled. He could not rent a bike from the City of Paris’s public Vélib’ Métropole scheme, which requires a credit card guarantee. Packages delivered by UPS were returned to the sender. His health insurer tried to cut him off.

Learning is a difficult and slow process. There are no shortcuts. And it is this process (reading, thinking, engaging) that makes analysis itself possible - to suggest that the heavy lifting can be outsourced in this way fundamentally misunderstands, and indeed undermines, the purpose of education.
