It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

We progressives and the left need to be more discerning about what the fuck we're actually willing to debate. A lot of these debates and questions are presented in bad faith and engagement just wastes time and energy. I'm not going to debate whether rape or genocide are "that bad." Fuck you.

My hottest take is that “don’t bring iced coffee to an interview” is an opinion of the (usually older) hirers. Iced coffee is more common for millennials and Gen Z, and it’s a generational signifier. “Don’t being iced coffee to an interview” is the same as “don’t signal that you’re Gen Z”

Not to mention the entire enterprise is creating a paramilitary that, when it is finally disbanded, will be composed of armed, violent, and indebted Nazis who USED to be paid to live out their turner diary fantasies. Without aggressive prosecution we are headed to a massive and connected insurgency

when a progressive politician in the US refuses to engage with culture war nonsense and sticks to the issues in an interview you get people saying "centrist dems, take note! here's how you answer this question" & yeah they already know sadly. they like the right-wing setting the agenda

A pattern here is anti trans changes made under a labour government are assumed to be "reasonable and moderate" by people who would oppose them if a right wing government was doing them. This is worse for trans people because cis people just don't believe us when we talk about what is happening.

At 2 months old, my son needed a life-saving surgery. He was admitted from the ER and the surgery was performed a couple hours later. Our insurance denied us because we could not demonstrate that the surgery was necessary or an emergency.

i don't believe talarico is a bigot. im pretty sure he isnt. but if he apparently "has to" answer bad faith questions in a way that appears to compromise on the rights of one group of people being repressed to get elected, it's fair to ask what else he will "have to" do once he's in office

TBT how I found out about 9/11: I was 8 years old, and my mom showed up to my elementary school at lunch so I knew something was up, and she said “hey do you know what the world trade towers are?” I said “yeah, the tallest buildings in the world” and she just said “well not anymore”

We must hold the line on this. Slop doesn't equal "bad" it means slop, the byproduct of some automated process. There's plenty of human-generated "content" that is not great, but that's not slop.

The heart of the anti-vax movement is parents (and other family members) who deeply resent their autistic & disabled children. Even IF they don’t hate the actual kids, they are pissed at the burden it places on their lives, and the limiting of the future. They interpret it as robbery.

“Virtuous” is perfect here I think. Being able to commit to their often expensive and impractical lifestyles is a representation of their ontological superiority to anyone who needs ACTUAL health interventions. It’s an easy on-ramp to their eugenic project because they can couch eugenics in virtue

Blah blah jazz age whatever. Fitzgerald actually deserves his status in the canon for nailing “childless 30 year old tries to relate to a parent who is his contemporary”
I waited but she didn’t say any more, and after a moment I returned rather feebly to the subject of her daughter.
“I suppose she talks, and—eats, and everything.”

“Amoral” is a bizarre way to describe deposing a foreign government and installing a puppet regime from which you can then steal oil. Seems like the morality of the action is quite clear to me.

Sports have never been and CAN NEVER BE diversion. Sports are a human behavior, and are thus a microcosmic ground on which our social politics play out. They are a reprieve from real life only because they are a fictional space where the concerns of real life can be simplified and therefore enjoyed

It's incredible that I can buy Microsoft Office in 2019 and then on July 13th of 2026 they can decide actually you're just no longer allowed to use it. Now you need to pay $100 per year. This should be illegal. The product works just fine, even if they no longer support it with updates.
