there literally is no system that is abuse proof, so at a certain point you’re just against the abstract concept of authority or power in general. I think about this when it comes to ALPRs for traffic enforcement. Like if you want to have laws at all, you have to give someone power.

yet the lack of training wasn't the issue here, so why are we bringing it up.
Van Houten told NPR member station WSKG in an interview that Doe's statement was taken by "an experienced investigator" trained in sexual abuse investigations "over an extended period of time." Cornell University Police did not respond to questions about details of the length, time and place of the interview or other details of the manner of questioning before publication.

In our media landscape, having enough money makes you too big to fail. It doesn’t matter if Gates has extremely credible allegations of what he took part in with Epstein or if Musk does Nazi salutes and pushes white genocide. They can get a profile/interview with any outlet they want at any time.

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

College administrators seem more than happy to expel and fire people who are a little bit loud about being anti-genocide; "embarrassing" the institution in the eyes of some apparently pro-genocide (?) donors is somehow more of a cardinal sin to them than raping a peer.

got to the part of the making of the atomic bomb by richard rhodes where Merle Tuve independently discovers the scientific discipline of Marketing from first principles. NIMBYs also harder to defeat than splitting the atom
When Tuve had first proposed the Van de Graaff to the zoning board of the prosperous Chevy Chase neighborhood the board had turned him down.
Smashing atoms smacked of industrial process and the neighborhood had its property values to consider. Tuve noted the popularity of the Naval Observatory, across Connecticut Avenue a few miles west, and rechristened his project the Atomic Physics Observatory, which it was. As the APO it won approval.

My greatest frustrating has been with policy wonks who persist in thinking we can just keep doing normal policy analysis ("calling balls and strikes") in this situation. The President of the United States is both lawless and out of his mind. That preempts all normal discussion.

the sad part is that survivors fought like hell to even get expulsion for rapists on the table. when I was an activist > 10 years ago, administrators were *shocked* that we wanted expulsion as a disciplinary option.

For nearly two months, Palestinians in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood had access to water at any time — a welcome sense of stability in the depths of a genocidal war. On Aug. 24, that stability was disrupted by an Israeli airstrike that destroyed the newly built water desalination plant.

Public backlash against ICE climaxed after the January 2026 fatal shootings of two US citizens in Minneapolis. Since then, stealthier arrest operations have fueled enforcement that is quieter but just as ruthless. The 24 hours between the mornings of July 13-14 stand out as exceptionally deadly. 🧵
