Regarding the Cornell rape scandal: think of it systemically. Rapists are a threat to individuals. People who report rape (like anti-genocide protesters) are threats to the system. The system will always move to protect itself and disregard individuals.

Whenever I hear a candidate for political office use the phrase, "protect our way of life," in a campaign ad, I assume they're saying that as an abbreviation of the 14 words and immediately disregard their candidacy.

‘Poem for Magda’ by Gordon Challis
Gordon Challis
Poem for Magda

When I am fit to speak of love the words will come
as easily as wheat puts forth its ample grain
or sunlight skips bright stones across a river.
My tongue thus far is husked and makes harsh sound
and shall not sing until I hear the growth of grain,
until I hear your name in all things blessed forever.

When I am fit to speak of love you may be past
your crest of youthful movement and your grace of line.
It will be late to praise you, late to flatter
myself by implication, finder of your eyes.
And there will be no need to find new ways
to ask or tell each other what’s the matter.

When I am fit to speak of love will be a day
of neither signs nor revelation. It might occur
some time when sleeping at my side I’ll feel you cry
and wake to hands that make your dream not true,
some moment when you’re ironing or touch your hair —
simple and warm as clothes fresh-folded on a chair.

Fernando Pessoa (writing as Ricardo Reis) translated from the Portuguese by Richard Zenith from A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe: Selected Poems, published by Penguin Books, 2006
I want the flower you are, not the one you give.
Why refuse me what I’m not asking you for?
You’ll have time to refuse
After you’ve given.
Flower, be my flower! If in this unyielding state
The dire sphinx’s hand should pluck you, you’ll roam
Forever, an absurd shadow,
Seeking what you didn’t give.

We'll keep on pointing at this comic by @skutchdraws.bsky.social and @hbomberguy.bsky.social until it's embarrassing for tech bros to call you a luddite for hating AI! More of Failure to Launch in the link bsky.app/profile/iron...
"Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" A simpleton looking peasant yells as they smash the wooden machine.

The standard narrative goes that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. (But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed.)

Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight.

And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it.

Prophecy, by Robert Penn Warren
Prophecy

You see no beauty in the parched parade,
The quivering, heat-glazed highways mile on mile,
The fields where beauty holds a debt unpaid,
The gray, drab barracks in monotonous, grim file.

You take no joy when dust wraiths dimly curl
Above the winding column crawling on far hills.
You see but short beyond the present whirl
Of circumstance, your little wrongs and petty ills.

But when it all has passed and you have lost
The swinging rhythmic cadence of the marching feet,
Then you will reck as paltry small the cost,
And memory will purge the bitter from the sweet.

Do Something, by Lucy Larcom
Do Something

If the world seems cool to you,
  Kindle fires to warm it!
Let their comfort hide from you
  Winters that deform it.
Hearts as frozen as your own
  To that radiance gather;
You will soon forget to moan,
  “Ah! The cheerless weather!”
If the world’s “a vale of tears,”
  Smile till rainbows span it;
Breathe the love that life endears—
Clear from clouds to fan it.
Of your gladness lend a gleam
  Unto souls that shiver;
Show them how dark sorrow’s stream
  Blends with hope’s bright river.

Paul Robeson was born on this day, April 9, in 1898. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote a poem about him and it's one of my favorites.
Paul Robeson

That time
we all heard it,
cool and clear,
cutting across the hot grit of the day.
The major Voice.
The adult Voice
forgoing Rolling River,
forgoing tearful tale of bale and barge
and other symptoms of an old despond.
Warning, in music-words
devout and large,
that we are each other’s
harvest:
we are each other's
business:
we are each other's
magnitude and bond.

Abrams isn't a man so much as he's an avatar of cultural entropy. If you make something popular enough eventually you will die or sell it off and and a person in thick rimmed glasses whose main artistic vision is that he loves to have meetings will take it and sandblast it until it's nothing. I hate to see this happen here but maybe it's good that this happened. Maybe every franchise should collapse into a version of itself that makes shareholders nod and shake each others' hands. We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend.

Epitaph on a Tyrant
W. H. Auden
1907 – 1973

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

The thing that gets me about this is that even if we wanted to make a positive AI ad, they never showcase AI being used to enhance someone’s day or improve their workflow. There’s no “it allows me to more easily do what I love.” It’s always presented as a failsafe for the dispassionate and incurious

Dusk, by Chūya Nakahara
Dusk

On the pond’s troubled, murky face,
gathered lotus leaves tremble,
As the lotus leaves are coy,
they hardly make a sound above a whisper.

When they make a sound my heart trembles,
my eyes trace the dim horizon...
the dark, dark mountains merely loom.
 — Once lost, things never return.

Nothing could be as sad as this;
the grass roots’ smell wafts gently to my nostrils,
the field’s earth and stones together looking at me.

 — In the end, I’m not willing to plough!
Standing absent-minded in the dusk;
somehow, when Father’s image sticks in my mind, I only
   advance a step or two.

RIP Ellen Bryant Voigt
The Bat

By Ellen Bryant Voigt
Reading in bed, full of sentiment
for the mild evening and the children
asleep in adjacent rooms, hearing them
cry out now and then the brief reports
of sufficient imagination, and listening
at the same time compassionately
to the scrabble of claws, the fast treble
in the chimney—
                      then it was out,
not a trapped bird
beating at the seams of the ceiling,
but a bat lifting toward us, falling away.

Dominion over every living thing,
large brain, a choice of weapons—
Shuddering, in the lit hall
we swung repeatedly against
its rising secular face
until it fell; then
shoveled it into the yard for the cat
who shuttles easily between two worlds.

love the two kinds of "play" playing together in this poem by Alberto Caeiro: "When you pick up a stone small enough to hold in your hand You know that it’s small enough to hold in your hand. What philosophy has ever achieved greater certainty?"
Alberto Caeiro

93

Grubby, unknown child playing at my door,
I don’t ask if you bring me a message full of symbols.
I’m drawn to you because I’ve never seen you before,
And, of course, if you were clean, you’d be a different child,
You wouldn’t even come here.
Play in the dust, go on, play!
I enjoy your presence with my eyes alone.
It’s far better always to see something as if for the first time than to know it,
Because knowing is like never having seen something for the first time,
And never having seen something for the first time is the same as only having
       heard about it.

The way in which this child is grubby is different from the way in which
       other children are grubby.
Go on, play! When you pick up a stone small enough to hold in your hand
You know that it’s small enough to hold in your hand.
What philosophy has ever achieved greater certainty?
None, and none can ever come and play at my door.

—Translated from the Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa & Patricio Ferrari
