A great blue heron stretches and squawks at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron is seen in left profile perched atop two partially submerged trees in the middle of a pond, approximately six feet above the water. The heron is hunched over with one leg and claw raised, its wings fully outstretched, and its beak wide open as it vocalizes. The trees enter the frame at mid-left and gradually rise as they extend toward the right side of the image. Softly blurred shoreline vegetation fills the foreground, while the upper quarter of the photograph is dominated by the dark reflection of the opposite shoreline cast across the gently rippled water by the rising sun. A veil of smoke from distant wildfires gives the entire scene an unusual, muted color cast.

A beautiful moment capturing a great blue heron stretching in the natural wetland habitat so vital to its survival.

A female red-winged blackbird carries a long, weathered cattail leaf as she flies through the reeds to build her nest at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the blackbird is centered in the frame with her wings fully extended and tail feathers fanned. She grips the thick end of the leaf in her beak, its length trailing well beneath her as she weaves through the cattails.

The entire scene is enveloped in last season’s earth-toned reeds, crisscrossing in every direction. Fine detail in her wings reveals subtle hints of red, a reminder that even female red-winged blackbirds carry touches of that signature color. A quiet, beautiful moment in nature.

Screenshot of the bird identification app Merlin showing the birds identified by sound in my yard in Columbus Ohio. Species include the warm brown House Sparrow, red crested Northern Cardinal, gray and brown white-throated Sparrow, gray and orange American Robin, flat blue-gray white-breasted Nuthatch, pink and brown House Finch, gray Northern Mockingbird that was not actually there, a glowing yellow American Goldfinch, and a tiny olive green Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
