Would people be interested in posters of this with the info on the back? It’s cheaper to get them made in batches, so I want to gauge interest 😊

I’ve been a bit MIA mostly because during the summer I transform into a ✨fulltime Momma💫 of two VERY active boys (6 and 2 yo). I love them with my WHOLE heart, but they need my constant attention and a LOT of active time. By the time they go to bed I’m exhausted. I’m still here though 😊

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology mourns the passing of artist, activist, and entrepreneur Sir Sam Neill.

Generations of SVP members found inspiration to become paleontologists through his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films. Sam’s portrayal of Dr. Grant brought an incredible humanity, awe, candor, and determination to the scientist-hero in one of the most popular pieces of media ever produced. In the decades since the release of Jurassic Park, Sam’s portrayal created a cultural touchstone for our field the likes of which we may never find again. Whether he knew at the time or not, he became a great friend of the profession of vertebrate paleontology. Our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be deeply missed.

The Tetons were littered with singing ruby-crowned kinglets. The crown is usually hidden, but in their spring fervor you can see it a lot, and boy were they frenetic, giving me great views of their namesake. They are tiny (5-10g) and rarely stop moving, which made photographing them a fun challenge.

I could watch chachies (plain chachalacas) for hours on end. These doofy chicken-adjacent birds only show up in the US in south Texas. They are comical, especially in groups when their politics can be witnessed. There are few thoughts in their heads, and I love them for it.
In this image five plain chachalacas are trying to fit as many of themselves as possible atop a small platform feeder.

Reindeer are not native to Iceland. Rather, they were introduced from Norway in the 18th century as possible livestock. While the livestock effort failed, reindeer are thriving in the wild in the Eastfjords region. They are one of my favorite animals to see when we visit Skálanes.

Skimmers are bizarre feeders with equally bizarre bill anatomy. Their extremely laterally flattened bill lets them "skim" through the water with their lower mandible, snapping closed on any fish that make contact with it. Black skimmers (Rynchops niger) occupy the Americas.

This is not even close to the clearest photo I have taken of these endangered red-crowned parrots (aka red-crowned amazon, green-cheeked amazon, or Mexican red-headed parrot), but I like the lines, the parrots all doing different things, and only one taking flight. ✨Learn more in the alt text 🦜
Green parrots sit on power lines with one taking off in flight.

These birds have a mixed status in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Some argue the birds naturally migrated north from their range in Mexico, some argue they are escaped/released pets. The reality is probably a mix of both, but today they are considered native by the state of Texas and they are a strong population representing a species in peril from habitat loss and heavy pressure from the pet trade.

There's something special about seeing wild parrots getting to be wild parrots. It was wonderful getting to watch their behaviors and little dramas as the flock gathered and prepared for their communal bedtime.

Flamingos are not the only bright pink birds out there, and they aren't even the only bright pink birds with funky bills. These roseate spoonbills also get their flashy colors from carotenoids, pigments they get from the aquatic invertebrates in their diet.

"Engage the solar panels!" Roadrunners droop their wings and raise their back and rump feathers to expose the downy feathers and skin underneath in order to take in warm sunbeams. They look ridiculous while they do it and I love it.

Bronzed cowbirds, like other cowbirds, are nest parasites. This means they lay their eggs in other species' nests, instead of making their own. It can be very upsetting to see babies of a species you love getting harmed by their over-sized, unplanned, adopted sibling (and their parents). However...

I don't think I'll ever tire of photographing the Ardeidae (herons, egrets, bitterns). I love watching them stalk and hunt in shallow water and the lace-like breeding plumes are a particular treat to see. This is another photo from the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center on Mustang Island.

A photo I took in 2015, that I still love. Check the alt text for more information about all the cool things going on in this picture of a red eft. #scicomm
A photo of a red eft, the terrestrial, juvenile stage of the eastern/red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). Behind the eft are living lycopods (clubmoss), the oldest extant group of vascular plants, estimated to have evolved around 410 million years ago! To put this in perspective, amphibians didn't show up in the fossil record until about 360 million years ago! Even closer to home, mammals only showed up around 120 million years ago; primates only 65 million years ago; the earliest humans (Homo spp.) only showed up about 2.3 million years ago; and Homo sapiens a mere 200,000 years ago. This means we've been around only 0.05% of the time the lycopods have. Thinking about this blows my mind in all sorts of amazing ways!!!

A Chihuahuan raven. These ravens overlap with common ravens and unless the birds are side-by-side, making noise, or in the hand, it is insanely hard to tell them apart. We saw a whole crew of them at the illustrious, top LRGV birding destination: the Brownesville dump.
