Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge.As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

I know I am not alone in saying that my relationship with mammograms is abusive. There’s a reason I rage-wrote a short story (titled “Abracadabra”) imagining better technology. Come on science, listen to this science fiction writer and make it so. This torture should not be so necessary. 😑

"This Labour Government is the worst thing to have ever happened to trans children." Do you recall, back in the 2010s, that campaign of videos where #LGBTQ+ people, including celebs, sent the message "it gets better" to prevent kids killing themselves? 16 years later, this. What the fuck happened?

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
More recently in Craighead County — symbolically, at least, Ground Zero for the state’s attack on libraries, thanks to Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) — the library announced several changes to circulation as it relates to minors. In a Facebook post, the library listed a number of changes to library policies, including:

Minors are prohibited from using the self-checkout kiosks;
Children under 13 years old may only check out materials from the designated children’s collection, while minors age 13-17 can only check out from the children or teen sections;
Minors may not check out DVDs at all; and
Minors are prohibited from entering or purchasing anything from the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

This is literally the thought process used to deny children vitally necessary accommodations in education and I have personally witnessed it be the proximal cause of a suicide attempt in multiple cases. You're irresponsible and should stay to the academy if you don't know how the world works.

Giant climate warning to PM painted on wildfire-scorched Welsh mountainside
Mark Mansfield A giant message warning Prime Minister Andy Burnham of the consequences of climate change has been painted across a Welsh mountainside devastated by wildfires. Greenpeace activists created the 1,120-square-metre artwork on scorched land at Sychnant Pass in Conwy, within Eryri National Park, following fires that burned large areas of the landscape. 🧵Referencing is political & one long term way of supporting Prof. Jason Arday is citing his work. Some of his (yes peer reviewed) work inc monographs in replies. PS I was sent this image a decade ago and do not have a source. If you know who made this, please let me know 🙏🏽
Slide titled Referencing is Political with bullet point text on the left and image from an old manuscript on the right. Text:
Citations are academic currency: it has value, it ascribes value
• Referencing is about accountability: it lets others go and check on your work
• Referencing is about payment: it acknowledges what you owe, to whom
• Citation is about gatekeeping: it recognises some kinds of texts & ideas as more valuable than others
• "I also want to acknowledge my debts through citation. Citation is feminist memory. It is how we leave a trail of where we have been and who helped us along the way." - Sara Ahmed
• It's not just how you cite, it's who you cite. Which thinkers do you value?
What kinds of authority do you recognise?

Another way of rephrasing the paradox of tolerance is that we can't have an agreement to disagree if the disagreement is over whether one side is free to continue existing or participating in things like society and civil disagreements without being exiled or discriminated against.
