Three panel comic. Panel 1: a little dog is sleeping on a couch, kicking its paws. A person says, “look! The little kicks!” Panel 2: in awe of the cuteness, the person continues, “what do you think he’s dreaming about?” Panel 3: in the dog’s dream, the pup is wearing a captain’s jacket, holding tightly to a wooden ship on stormy seas. In his other paw, he is gripping a harpoon as an enormous vacuum cleaner breaches violently from the water.

Lewis also claims the footsoldiers had a certain type: white, middleclass, desperate to have Elon's attention. Many had been rejected from elite institutions and had a chip on their shoulder and enjoyed their sense of power over people who knew much more than they did.
The people who rallied to the cause and felt qualified to execute Elon Musk’s vision for the federal government shared certain qualities. They were mostly young white males. They were mostly from upper-middle-class or rich families. Most knew or pretended to know how to program a computer. Not all of them, but enough of them for there to be a pattern, had been rejected from the most selective colleges and universities and ended up feeling they’d been screwed by the admissions process. They landed at Penn instead of Princeton, or the University of Nebraska instead of Harvard, with a grievance that added to the foundation of their politics. They thought of themselves as the smartest people in the room and couldn’t understand why the rest of the room didn’t simply stand up and cheer. In Washington they borrowed from Elon Musk their status and sense of superiority. They also seemed to share his pleasure in the idea of people being afraid of them.

Dogcatcher xkcd.com/3309/
Comic. [Three people seated at table.] PERSON 1 with ponytail: Once we break this story, he won’t be able to get elected *dogcatcher*. PERSON 2: Why do people always use “dogcatcher” as the example of a worthless office? Animal control officers are valued professionals. It just seems unnecessarily insulting. PERSON 3 with shoulder-length hair: Well, their job *is* catching strays.

Screenshot of a post by Matt Binder (@MattBinder). The image shows Jar Jar Binks, the Gungan character from Star Wars, in red robes with both arms raised as he addresses the Galactic Senate, with rows of senate pods behind him. A large, empty white speech bubble points to his mouth. Below the image, the post quotes a January 17, 2024 tweet from far-right leader Geert Wilders (@geertwilderspvv) in Dutch: "We hebben een serieus probleem met de politieke ontwikkelingen mbt de dwangwet en ik hoop dat dat de komende dagen kan worden opgelost." The post shows 638 replies, 19,000 reposts, 168,000 likes, and 9 million views.

**English translation**

"We have a serious problem with the political developments regarding the coercion law, and I hope that can be resolved in the coming days."

**Context for the translation**

"Mbt" is an abbreviation of *met betrekking tot*, meaning "regarding" or "with respect to." "Dwangwet" translates literally to "coercion law" or "compulsion law." It is not an official name: Wilders' party consistently calls the Spreidingswet (Dispersal Act) the "dwangwet" because it puts pressure on municipalities to take in asylum seekers.

The tweet is from January 2024. The Dutch Senate had approved the law with the support of VVD senators, while VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz wanted to scrap it, and this happened while the VVD was negotiating with Wilders' PVV to form a coalition government.

The tweet became a meme among English speakers mocking the far-right politician. Some Dutch speakers also pointed to the “we hebben een serieus probleem” construction as an example of contemporary English influencing Dutch instead of a more typical phrase “Daar is een serieus probleem” (There is a serious problem).

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
