Let me give a concrete example of the importance of applications with high risk-high reward as well as the role of NIH staff in taking risks. Decades ago, a physical chemist proposed ideas about doing mass spectrometry on proteins (when this was deemed probably impossible). 1/n

Highlighting this RRG update in case it can be useful for anyone. One tangent from this, re: #glycotime conferences... it is a bummer GRCs for Glycobiology, Carbohydrates, CAZymes, and Bioorganic Chemistry all occur in the same year/cycle. Carb and Bioorg Chem even fall on the same week this year!
