Irrational
for Tara

We’ve got debt. It’s coming for us,
big bad debt. It’s pouring out our ears,
or down down down like rain
becomes a Bob Dylan song.
He’s got weather and cash to spare.
Maybe we should write him
a letter, better—letters together.
There’s money in numbers.
Yeah, we’ve got debt. Poems cost
good coin, sure. And you lost all yours
when your blood was sick
back before I knew you.
We used to sit around not doing much,
or caring about much except
our distant families. Far far far
far—once you lived in Romania;
once I lived in the desert. We used to write
about all that distance. Now we type
to fill it. All the broke-ass equations
can’t put things back where they were.
I’d love to find you again some night
while I’m walking home drunk,
shouting in the street. You’d see me
from blocks away and know my shadow
—the most irrational gift
I’ve earned.

My book FAITH FARM & I are overflowing w/ gratitude no words can express. Siri Hustvedt, thank you for your abundant generosity, for entering the path of these poems w/ such care & attention, for your focused time & effort reading my words, writing yours. Out 3/16/27 w/ @unboundedition.bsky.social!
Siri Hustvedt’s blurb for Tara Skurtu’s forthcoming book of poems, Faith Farm:

With their swift, agile transitions from the demotic to the elevated, from the everyday to the transcendent, from brevity to extension, from lyricism to narrative, the poems in Faith Farm act on the reader by surprise. The result is an extraordinary book that charts the wrenching, joyous, painful, and sometimes funny truths of a life as it changes.

Day—15 National Poetry Month ~ Tara Skurtu Morning Love Poem (oof) —It's hard to say I need you enough. Today I did. Walked into your morning shower fully clothed. All the moments we stop ourselves just because we might feel embarrassed or impractical, or get wet.
MORNING LOVE POEM
Dreamt last night I fed you, unknowingly, something you were allergic to.
And you were gone, like that.
You don't have even a single allergy, but still. The dream cracked. Cars nose-dived
off snow banks into side streets. Sometimes dreams slip poison, make the living
dead then alive again, twirling in an unfamiliar room.
It's hard to say I need you enough.
Today I did. Walked into your morning shower fully clothed. All the moments
we stop ourselves just because we might feel embarrassed or impractical, or get wet.
