For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.

Also from the same document. wtf is this? Why is a panel reviewing the 60 service users and their referrals, rather than investigating the people behind this fiasco?
Having taken this decision, it is important that the NWJCC now proceeds with the review to minimise the time of uncertainty for people who have had their surgery paused, that surgery, if appropriate, is reinstated as quickly as possible and that all those impacted are supported effectively through the process. We have identified that approximately 60 patients were due surgery between the pausing of surgery in August and the end of December, our priority is to bring certainty these people as quickly as possible. Appointments to the independent clinical review panel have been made. Subject to final governance approval, it is anticipated that the review’s terms of reference will be approved and the panel will commence its work during the week commencing 21 September 2026. We are confident that all 60 can be reviewed before the end of December.

1/🧵 From the agenda for next week’s meeting at NHS Wales. But we can assume the arbitrary decision to “pause” referrals was made on a summary of the same information. And, after a month, there is still nothing of substance that can be presented. Sorry, but people should lose their job for this.

Are you Autistic and transgender/nonbinary? Have you ever had an eating disorder? If so - researchers from the University of Edinburgh are running an online survey about your experiences. For more information or to take part: tinyurl.com/57zd65rx
New Research Project:
Getting Better From An Eating Disorder: Autistic Trans/Nonbinary Voices

If you are interested in taking part, the survey link can be found at: https://tinyurl.com/57zd65rx

Who can take part? Autistic and trans/nonbinary adults, based in the UK, who have had an eating disorder in the past.

What would taking part involve? You would fill in an online survey (mainly with free-text boxes) about your experiences of getting better from an eating disorder and your opinions on the word ‘recovery’ as applied to eating disorders. The survey should take about 30 – 45 minutes. You can choose to enter a prize draw, with winners getting £50 or £100.

This study has been designed and led by an Autistic trans researcher and a Lived Experience Advisory Group. It has ethical approval from the School of Health in Social Science at the University of Edinburgh. What the UK Government is going by its decisions on trans people is teaching trans people that authority doesn't protect, but instead abuses. This applies in schools, in the workplace, in civic society, in politics, in healthcare. And if they can do this to trans people, they can do it to anyone.

Dear Mr Green,
RE: Pausing of gender-affirming surgeries by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning
Committee
We are writing to express our profound disappointment at the abrupt pausing of planned operations within the Welsh Gender Service. The sudden nature of this decision by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee has left patients, many of whom have been preparing for surgery for months or years, without the care they were expecting and relying upon.
The impact on individuals and the wider trans community in Wales has been significant.
Understandably, this development has caused distress, fear, and a deep sense of uncertainty.
This comes at a time when the rights and dignity of trans people across the UK are increasingly under pressure. You will know that gender-affirming healthcare in Wales is clinician-led, patient-focused, and carefully paced; it is not rushed, nor undertaken lightly.
In light of this, we would like to raise the following urgent questions on behalf of our constituents and the wider community:
• Why has surgery been halted for a form of treatment that has among the highest levels of psychiatric screening and one of the lowest regret rates of any procedure offered by the NHS?
• What specifically is the cause for concern?
• What evidence informed this decision?
• Why were patient stakeholders not consulted before the decision was taken?
• Was any risk assessment carried out regarding the impact of cancelling treatment at such short notice? If not, why?
• What role, if any, did NHS England play in influencing or directing this decision?
• What is the scope of any review now underway, and when can we expect its conclusions?Senedd Cymru
Welsh Parliament
Plaid Cymru
• When can patients expect surgeries to recommence?
• What safeguards are in place to protect patients' mental health during this pause?
• What commitment can be given to the continuation of therapies and hormone treatment during this period?
Patients deserve clarity, reassurance and a clear pathway forward. We would be grateful for a detailed response addressing each of the above points, together with confirmation of how the Welsh Gender Service intends to support those affected during this period of uncertainty.
This letter is also being copied to Suzanne Rankin and Kirsty Williams, Chief Executive and Chair of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, given the board's role in administering the Welsh Gender Service.
We look forward to your reply.
