I really hate language like 'we show x that could potentially contribute to y'. This usually means we wanted to do y, but we did not get there, and are hoping someone else in the future might solve this problem. This language is tolerable only in the discussion and speculation part of a paper.

"Bhuri" for fair-skinned foreigners. "Tori" for restless bustle. British surveyors mapped a continent from this ridge. From here came numbers that measured the world's tallest mountain. Mount Everest entered history but Bhuri Tori slipped out of it. The name lingered and science faded. #india

SmothCSV -- the tool I always wanted smoothcsv.com Picture this: You need to explore visually some CSV data. So you double-slick the file and... wait for 20 seconds for Excel to boot up... Agggr. Instead, SmoothCSV does the job blazing fast (written in rust). FOSS, quick, sleek, beautiful 😍

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

Over on #X, some people want Grok to apologise for generating offending images. The cognitive dissonance is astounding. #Grok is a LLM. It is nothing but an elaborate database of affinities between arrangements of letters and arrangements of pixels. It has no agency.

@bsky.app Ok. New theme from Bluesky makes everything less legible in dark mode because the deep almost benthic blue accent color. And the new icon is ugly. It does not have a dark version on iOS. Fail much.

@bsky.app has started its downhill journey to X-fication. Domain #verification prevents anonymous malicious actors because a domain name is identifiable at ICANN. #Bluecheckmarks that can only be given by select entities (including Bluesky) inevitably creates 2 classes of users. This is a fail.

I use an app called @obsidian.md to keep my notes from meetings, conferences, as well as a lab book. I used to think it is a pretty niche program. But seeing their enterprise supporter list , it obviously isn't : obsidian.md/enterprise/ I just wish their pricing for sync and publish was reasonable.

#TIL the word “Veda” , referring to the ancient Hindu texts comes from the same root - ‘vid’ - to know by observing/seeing. This is also the root of Latin ‘videre’ - to see, Greek ‘uida’ - to know/see, English - ‘wisdom’ and ‘wit’, and in the modern world ‘video’.
