Just incredible news on reviving Voyager I. Think of it: a computer chip 15 billion(!) miles away is broken. The solution is to repackage & move key software, w/ code sent via radio signal that takes 22+ hrs to reach that little 46yr old machine. AND IT IS WORKING. blogs.nasa.gov/voyager/2024...

This decadent, cozy Lasagne Bolognese is a twenty-layer striation of noodles, ragu, béchamel and cheese, and it’s worth every step because it’s the highest calling of lasagna.

Middle school pickup. Kid abruptly steps off the sidewalk into the road, SUV slams on brakes, stops just in time. Oblivious, the kid proceeds to his dad’s car, which is double parked and blocking traffic in the other lane. A whole family that’s just an incredible affront to natural selection

One thing I want to point out: When Nex Benedict's story became news, multiple sources indicated he used they/them pronouns. Friends later confirmed he primarily used he/him, so I added this update to my original story and changed throughout. People make it seem so complicated, but it's really not.
UPDATE 2/26/14: Friends of Nex’s told NBC News that Nex “primarily went by he/him pronouns at school but also used they/them pronouns, which Nex's family also used.” They also confirmed that he was transgender. I’ve updated this story to reflect those facts, which were not clear at the time of publishing.

there is so much to be learned from this man's brain
Being a conservative—or at least being considered one—at the Times was a strange experience. I often found myself asking questions like “Doesn’t all of this talk of ‘voter suppression’ on the left sound similar to charges of ‘voter fraud’ on the right?” only to realize how unwelcome such questions were. By asking, I’d revealed that I wasn’t on the same team as my colleagues, that I didn’t accept as an article of faith the liberal premise that voter suppression was a grave threat to liberal democracy while voter fraud was entirely fake news.

In Judaism we talk about “disagreements for the sake of heaven.” In the Talmud, when matters of Jewish law can’t be resolved on the page, there’s a cute acronym that’s basically, “someday Elijah the prophet will show up and tell us who won but until then 🤷” Not all disagreements are bad or wrong.

Abortion is a medical procedure. You are asking doctors to withhold treatment based on an arbitrary date. Would you support denying treatment to all those with stage four cancer, kidney failure, or heart transplants. Do you feel you should make those decisions?

The whole idea of journalism as positive or negative "platforming" is starting to feel like a real age-of-social-media wrong turn. Journalism is about shedding light. There are many ways to do that well and many to do it badly, and execution is everything. But "hosting a viewpoint" is not the job.

Please, read the whole thing, but this fucking point right here. This is what we need to CONSTANTLY remind ourselves of. smadin.net/2024/02/23/a...
The surest way to immunize yourself against fascism’s insidious ability to work even well-meaning people around to accepting inhumanity by starting with the people they think are the ickiest, is to steadfastly and immovably refuse to find any people icky; to relentlessly search your heart for any shred of revulsion against your fellow humans, and incinerate it.
