Look. It's a simple calculation but a difficult one. Victor Marx wants to consecrate the state to God. Weiser would probably not, but the chance is never zero. In that scenario, I want one of the masters of Cajun Karate, the art of Keichu-Do, on my side

The whole vernacular of the small-L liberalism of the center-right and center-left is about procedure, problem-solving, listening and learning, collaboration, innovation, etc. etc.. Nothing is zero-sum, there are no irreconcilable conflicts. None of it works with a problem like "not enough water."

Somehow I’d managed to forget about the time during the Great Depression that anti-hunger demonstrators kinda-sorta-maybe did a Communist Jan. 6 at the Colorado State Capitol
grocery stores. They were shot at and a few were wounded." Local newspapers refused to report these incidents. To avoid further bloodshed, Wahlberg pleaded with the malcontent to assemble in front of the state capitol on January 3, 1934, when the legislature reconvened. Perhaps, thought Wahlberg,
numbers might impress the legislators. 47
After a year of repeated failures, the "Twiddling 29th"
returned to do its part to alleviate hunger and suffering in Colorado. An angry crowd had assembled outside the state
capitol to greet their leisurely legislators and to prod them into action. Exactly what occurred during this confrontation is not absolutely clear. According to Frank Clay Cross, a
writer for the Nation, Colorado underwent a "revolution." Much to the chagrin of Wahlberg, asserted Cross, leaders of the local Communist party "seized control of the milling mop" and persuaded the crowd to storm the state capitol. Following their communist leaders, the rioters flowed into the senate chamber as panic-stricken senators fled before them.
The throne crowded into the lawmakers' seats. Mounting the rostrum, the spokesman began "the first Communist controlled meeting ever held under the dome of any state capitol in the United States. "48
Although such an event might have constituted front-
page news in some areas, daily newspapers in Denver never reported the incident. 49 Neither did the state legislature
acknowledge the occurrence. The official minutes of the Senate for January 3 do not indicate a disturbance, and the
House Journal recorded only a recess at the critical hour.50
How valid, then, was the Cross description? Few former state officials seem to remember exactly what happened
inside the capitol building on January 3, 1934. They either plead absence, possess faded memories, or reject the entire episode, S1 on the other hand, one eyewitness on the outside of the capitol building does provide an insight into the events. He was the Reverend Wahlberg.
"I am certain that there were over 2000 people that
as he went back into the building." Afterward, Wanlberg led a delegation of clergymen, social workers, and community Leaders who met with the legislature to encourage it into action.
"we gave them 48 hours to come out with something,"
Wahlberg asserted, "or we could no longer assume any responsibility for what might happen." The legislature busied Itself with this task.52
As for Cross's "revolution," Wahlberg inquired into
its authenticity at the time. "I was not aware of the Communist meeting in the Senate Chambers until the article appeared, " he contended. "I discussed the matter with several senators," he added, but they "did not know what took
place. They admitted that they were afraid of what might take place and just took off 125 So Wahlberg then searched
out a local Communist leader.
I talked with a Communist, named William Deiterick, the owner of the Auditorium Book store.
He discounted
the story.
He said that some of the demonstrators had
entered the chambers and sat in the vacated chairs.
Nothing much was done because there wasn't anyone there to talk with so they
soon departed and joined
he crowd gathered on the steps of the capito. ullding.54
Later, Wahlberg met with Cross, whose mother was a member of the Grace Church congregation. "I don't know what Cross saw In the Senate Chambers, "wanlberg admitted. "He made
