Still thinking about a comment a read in response to "fast, cheap, or good, pick two" that responded with, "I never expected companies to pick fast twice."

Last week at Goatmire I gave an extended lightning talk titled "The Emperor's New Clothes". It will be released as a four-part series, starting with this pilot episode. Special thanks to Iryna Kostiuk for recording it. Enjoy!

There are conferences, and then, there's Goatmire. It was such an incredible experience that I'm struggling to find the words to summarize it. But I'll do my best, and I shall do so without the assistance of an LLM, because this event deserves nothing less 😉

Losing my mind while doing some research for my creature design lecture that the closest relative to the maned wolf is the bush dog. Like there has gotta be a fable where the maned wolf took all the leggie from its cousin

I just heard someone talking about working through people hesitant to adopt new technology say “we need to view resistance as insight worth understanding, not ask what’s wrong with them.” YES. FUCK YES. I wish this were more widely understood in the current AI discourse.

Pleased to finally announce... Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel! "There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home."

Publishers Marketplace Deal Report, August 6, 2026:

Jeff Vandermeer's ABDICATION, the last novel in the Southern Reach series, in which an ornithologist exiled to a remote coast stumbles on a terrifying secret, a self-proclaimed king pursues a mystery hidden in a strange weather station, and a man who can become a cormorant is tasked with a deadly mission through a future landscape transformed by Area X, for publication in October 2027, in a significant deal, to Jenna Johnson at Farrar, Straus, by Joseph Veltre at the Gersh Agency and Alex Kohner at Yorn Levine (world).

The oldest known instance of the "Cool S", a symbol of unknown origin, on a tenth century Viking runestone. This sigil has persisted through the centuries and is still found today. Scholars believe its origin is unrelated to the letter S, and that it may have originally been part of a ritual.

fixed your headline

A hit song on the Billboard 100 charts is termed *$k$-good* if it is _ever_ in a weekly top-$k$, and *$k$-immediate* if it _debuts_ in the top-$k$.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.

*Headline 1.* Olivia Rodrigo is the first $(10,10)$-Olivian woman.

The tender skin beneath the crisp glaze melts in the mouth, as the braised & brined meat tantalizes w a firm yet pliant feel reminiscent of chicken, yes, but also eel. The faint taste of something bitter is sublimated in mouth-watering savory moistness, juxtaposed with the spicy crunch.
