Swallows at West Kennet Long Barrow, there’s a nest inside one of the chambers. Perhaps a second brood. Mum or Dad obligingly perched waiting for visitors to leave so I could take this picture. A blurry Silbury Hill behind him/her. Thousands of years of history and still part of a living landscape.

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)
An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Today I visited the location of Sandleford Warren from Watership Down. It’s sad to think that life is now imitating art. Richard Adams imagined a notice announcing the intention to build, Fiver saw the field of blood and there’s now a real planning notice for a housing development. Sad indeed. 🐇

Black-headed gulls aren’t just seaside scavengers — they often fly low over canals catching insects in mid-air, almost like swifts. Saw a flock doing exactly that over the Kennet & Avon today. Surprisingly agile birds.

Inspired after visiting the Radical Rural exhibition at @themerl.bsky.social I went to Kintbury to visit the grave of William Winterbourne, the only Berkshire man hanged for breaking threshing machines during the Swing Riots of the 1830’s. Really brings home how brutal life was for rural workers.

Artist Maggie Vandewalle’s wise hares always hint at the rich & magical lore surrounding them
Contemporary artist Maggie Vandewalle has done many works over the years of hares..they often have rich chestnuts and dark brown for their fur and also black with long & wise ears and faces. She often positions them in stormy weather or weather close to storming…they are often in large fields & moors & in their home habitats…they look intelligent, active, curious, and on guard and in so doing, she hints at the rich and cultural lore & histories surrounding hares in many global myths, histories, & traditions.
