Today's rain has been a massive disappointment so far - less than 2mm. A few more showery outbreaks to come this afternoon but still won't make much of a dent in the drought.

The UK has just recorded its first three week long heatwave on record, based on recent Met Office observations - 21 days at Exeter Airport and Usk beats the record of 17 days at Cambridge in 1976 by 4 days. It has been a notable summer so far, with records continuing to tumble.
Bar chart titled "Longest heatwave duration in the UK per year," showing the longest single heatwave recorded at any UK station each year from 1959 to 2026, in days. Grey bars give each year's value; most sit between 3 and 10 days, with a dashed line marking the 1991–2020 average of 6.8 days. Notable earlier peaks include 17 days in 1976 and 16 in 1997. The final bar, 2026, is highlighted dark red at 21 days - a new record, held jointly by Exeter Airport No. 2 and Usk No. 2. A Theil–Sen trend line rises left to right at 0.67 days per decade, with a shaded 95% confidence band and a Mann–Kendall significance of p < 0.001. A footnote notes that the record begins in 1959 because station coverage is sparse before then, and that heatwave thresholds vary by county from 25 to 28°C - Exeter is 25°C and Usk 26°C - so lower-threshold regions are more likely to set the annual maximum.

"Paysage de Printemps" (Spring Landscape) by French Neo-Impressionist painter, Achille Laugé, 1910
Dense, shady woods border the left side of the path. Four prominent, vertical tree trunks line the right side of the canvas. A calm blue sea meets a low horizon line in the distance. A single, tiny yellow sailboat dots the water near the center. A vibrant, sun-drenched grassy slope dominates the center and right foreground. Deep, cool shadows stretch across the path from the dense trees on the left. Golden light filters through the canopy, creating bright oval spots on the path. The entire scene mimics a bright, overexposed summer afternoon.

Happy birthday to the heatwave of 1976 which began today 50 years ago, peaking at 35.9°C. If a comparable heatwave happened in the current climate it would be 3-4°C hotter, peaking at 38-39°C. And the actual forecast is for temperatures of 38-39°C in the next few days with a red heatwave warning.

David Hockney: up there as my favourite 'living' artist ever since I saw his show 'A Bigger Picture' at the RA in 2012. I loved his bold use of colour, when roads are purple & verdant greens sing & shine from the canvas. What a loss, but what JOY! The Road Across the Wolds Poster by David Hockney.

Sir David Attenborough… on your 100th birthday, we thank you. For a lifetime dedicated to the natural world, and for sharing its story with such grace and wonder. Generations have fallen in love with nature because of you. Happy birthday, Sir. 🎉
This photograph captures Sir David Attenborough seated outdoors on the rugged terrain of Skomer Island. Behind him, the ocean and coastal cliffs form a scenic backdrop under a clear sky. Sir David, dressed in a khaki jacket and light trousers, looks towards the camera with a gentle expression, exuding a sense of warmth, calm, and wisdom. Around him, puffins can be seen flying and perched on the rocky ground, illuminated in rays of golden sunlight as the sun sets behind the cliffs.
