Mechanosensation isn't just at the cell surface. In gut smooth muscle, we found that Piezo1 is mostly intracellular, <40 nm from RyR and BK channels. Activating it hyperpolarizes cells and weakens contraction- like a molecular brake. Stay tuned for more to come! J Physiol: doi.org/10.1113/JP29...

Why does this matter? It highlights a broader biological principle: microvascular rarefaction can quietly compromise metabolic support and impair excitability in highly demanding tissues, long before myocyte density itself declines.

This localized loss had major functional consequences. Our team observed progressive bradycardia and a massive jump in beat-to-beat variability (consecutive beats differing by >6ms jumped from ~3.5% to around 30%).

Our team found that Angiotensin II signaling triggers severe microvascular rarefaction, but it is highly specific. Vessel density dropped by ~36% in males and ~50% in females specifically in the superior SA node, while the inferior node was spared.

Pleased to report we made the cover of the upcoming issue of Diabetologia for our most recent paper!! The effort was led by Ryan Hart (@ryanhart13.bsky.social). Description in the ALT text, full open acces link here: rdcu.be/fptyS
The cover image of the September issue of the scientific journal 'Diabetologia'.

The cover picture shows a high-resolution image of a live murine pancreatic islet expressing the calcium indicator GCaMP6s in every islet cell. Alpha and beta cells are pseudocoloured in hot pink and grey blue, respectively. Select single cell calcium responses to a succession of stimuli, including glucose, amino acids, somatostatin, epinephrine and potassium chloride, are highlighted. The extent and mechanisms of somatostatin inhibition of beta and alpha cell calcium and cAMP signalling have not previously been compared directly in real time. In the September issue of Diabetologia, Hart et al report that during nutrient stimulation, somatostatin inhibits insulin secretion indirectly by restraining alpha cell calcium and cAMP downstream of somatostatin receptor 2; this prevents glucagon from stimulating beta cells.
