This is crazy. It's morally wrong, socially irresponsible, technically stupid, financially dangerous (does that tiny disclaimer saying "don't trust this!" in a tiny font going to hold up in court?). What is up at Google, have they truly given the reins of the company to an unfathomable idiot?

I genuinely cannot believe Google is now showing Gemini-generated medical snippets including *drug summaries and medical advice* to treatserious health conditions. I checked. It does. With barely a tiny disclaimer about GenAI. How can a (formerly?) trusted company be so incredibly reckless?

The math benchmarks I want: 1. OopsBench: given a faulty proof with numbered steps, which step contains an unfixable logical flaw? 2. DunnoMath: half the problems are taken from FrontierMath, half are almost certainly unsolvable. Major points off for guessing an answer to an unsolvable problem.

This is one of the most well-written explanations of certain kinds of AI errors I’ve seen to date. (The whole article is great too.) www.theverge.com/c/24300623/a...
When you pose the question to a language model, what you are really asking is, “Given the statistical distribution of words in the vast public corpus of text, what are the words most likely to follow the sequence ‘what country is to the south of Rwanda?’” Even if the system responds with the word “Burundi,” this is a different sort of assertion with a different relationship to reality than the human’s answer, and to say the AI “knows” or “believes” Burundi to be south of Rwanda is a category mistake that will lead to errors and confusion.

Few people even know about this; when people are asked in surveys how child mortality has changed the majority says it has stagnated or increased. If you consider that many don't know about humanity's biggest achievement, then it's not surprising that many are so pessimistic about our future.

So many people, CS researchers included, think that you can explore how an LLM works by simply asking it to tell you what it is doing or "thinking". Here @jennhu.bsky.social provides an excellent illustration of how that approach fails even at the most basic level.

I made a case today at the Health Endeavors Augmented Intelligence summit that critical medical decisions should not be made by #AI or ML models, but those models are very useful for informing providers about possible concerns to explore or opportunities to investigate
