Dana Skully got a new yard sign but Indiana Bones thinks we should wait til after the next bout of wind & rain to install it.
A 12 foot skeleton stands in front of a house with a porch, behind an iron fence. On the fence, a sign with the opening of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House in the style of a progressive “in this house” sign.

IN THIS HOUSE, WE BELIEVE NO LIVE ORGANISM CAN REMAIN SANE UNDER CONDITIONS OF ABSOLUTE REALITY EVEN LARKS AND KATYDIDS ARE SUPPOSED BY SOME TO DREAM THIS HOUSE HAS STOOD FOR 80 YEARS AND MIGHT STAND FOR 80 MORE WALLS UPRIGHT DOORS SENSIBLY SHUT

Again, I never again want to hear the Republicans claim the mantle of, or be referred to as, the "party of national security." This, as with threatening to invade our NATO allies, should have long ago immediately ended his presidency. It also should again now.

there was a tumblr post going around positing that Flanagan isn't fucking these texts up by accident, he's consciously choosing classic horror novels that are critical of the nuclear family/women's roles in society in order to "fix" them and I'm not NOT convinced at this point.

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

Gretchen on Flanagan has me screaming with joy
Would you like to watch teenagers talk to each other about cancel culture in desaturated, non-specific upper-class suburban homes? Would you like to see a version of Stephen King’s classic horror novel Carrie in which the titular character is a naive but irrepressibly positive little darling not too dissimilar from an alternate version of Pippi Longstocking who’d been raised by a survivalist cult? Maybe you’d like to hear Lana del Rey inexplicably crooning “fuck me to death, love me ‘til I love myself” over footage of kids going to prom, or watch parents, faculty, and students have the same exchange about bullying and social media half a dozen times. If all of that sounds good to you, Mike Flanagan is here, and he’d like to talk to Carrie White about the Avengers Initiative.

I have loathed or despised every single one of Flanagan's "horror" adaptations. My horror students know if they want me to rant, to talk about MF. Let's say that I am not even a little surprised that he created something limp, lifeless. It's what he does.

The case is a bitter reminder of the ways LGBTQ people have had their identities weaponized by the courts in the past, most notoriously through a legal defense tactic known as gay or trans “panic.”
