Well, the whole idea of higher education as something more than a play-doh fun factory for the children of the elites had a good run.

Sam Altman: Artificial General Intelligence is here. Also Sam Altman: ChatGPT can make a picture of you with 80s hair! 80s HAIR!!!
From an email from ChatGPT I received today:

ChatGPT

We've been busy. Here's what's new.
From bringing your imagination to life with Images 2.5, to thinking out loud with
the new Voice mode, to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with GPT-6
Astra-there's plenty to explore.
Try Images 2.5

LET'S
PARTY!

New photo. Wrong decade.
Try big '80s hair or a '90s album-cover look. Different era.
Unmistakably you.

When my youngest son was a kid he had a pediatrician who each year would ask: “who gets to look at your genitals?” Grimly he would recite his line: “parents & doctors.” He looked so unhappy every time so one year I decided to lighten the vibe, adding “& anyone who’s got $10.” True, unfortunate story

All the text on this Luddite meme is generated by Ai. Which is so fucking depressing I am going back to bed.
Screenshot of Pangram analysis of image scoring the text as 100% AI generated.
The image is of a woman in a cap holding a white sign that reads:

I REFUSE to install an app just to park my car.
工
REFUSE to open an account just to order food.
I REFUSE to scan a QR code just to view a menu.
I REFUSE to hand over my email every time I shop.
I MISS when you could simply live your life WITHOUT every company TRACKING your every MOVE.

A strong jobs report & markets get spooked. Once, investors feared rising labor costs would cut profits. Since the post-covid free-money era, all that matters is maintaining the circular financing shellgame. Now the selloff is about rates as good job numbers makes Fed hikes more likely.

The question as to whether a nation has a "right to exist" never makes sense to me. The answer is NO. No nation has a "right to exist. Nations are imposed, they dissolve local languages, cultures, peoples & freeze the resulting slurry into statuette to commemorate divine/natural "right" and "unity"

This is the start of my 32nd year as a professor & my 37th teaching undergraduate students & my 43rd living out my life on campus. So much has changed in that time. The only constant is that students are magic. I would take a bullet for them (& it may in fact come to that before this decade is over)

Free speech is not academic freedom. Free speech is content neutral. We must defend even odious speech in that context. Academic freedom, however, is based on expert knowledge and peer review, and we do not need to defend that which has been overwhelmingly rejected by the experts in the field.

THIS is the crossroads? We have to defend an avowed racist to prove we love academic freedom? See, I really don’t think most academics understand what academic freedom means. Signing a letter to protect a racist’s right to be a racist when the scholarly debate on his eugenics is long is not it

I have also been thinking of Aaron Swartz often —he downloaded scholarly essays in the hopes that information migbt be free & was hounded to death. Silicon Valley has stolen all scholarship and creative work with impunity, so that they might put it behind a moat in order to control the future.

say what you will about the myriad valid concerns with current LLMs but I personally will never get over the fact that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted to his literal death for downloading JSTOR and then a decade later, they downloaded & ingested the entire world and our IP laws just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
