Waking to another Trump outrage as he bails out his pal in the Kremlin by buying his diesel oil just in time for a winter offensive against Ukraine. This just weeks after tough new sanctions on anyone who buys Russian oil. But for the Times this llatest betrayal is not big news, just fifth story

Still think Labour should just fix this. I reckon they could use it to justify bringing the 45p rate down to either £80k or £90k (whichever is best for the sums) and still get minimal grumbling. It's as close as you'd get to free money in the real economy.

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.

Labour should be doing this anyway. It's a bizarre piece of tax silliness in the system.

The BBC news summary this morning went seamlessly from "critics warn PM scrapping triple lock would be electoral suicide" to "critics ask if PM has nerve to make tough decisions" and I don't think it's a particularly pro Burnham stance to suggest he might not be the entire problem here.

"The early days of Andy Burnham’s government have made Starmer’s look positively energetic: a PM who usually loves nothing more than being on camera has studiously avoided saying a word as he loses control of law and order in Britain, and his home secretary seems determined to appease the thugs."

If Shabana Mahmood is tough, why is she so slow to crack down on Danny Tommo and the far right?
Weeks of what looks like blatant lawbreaking have finally resulted in an arrest. But the home secretary seems happy to look elsewhere

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Northern Ireland's devolved government is in effect insolvent. It has become an unwelcome UK experiment in what happens when fiscal discipline collapses - and Stormont has little incentive to control its spending. London talks tough, but keeps acting weak.

Some people might think that making Ed Sheeran some kind of Judas goat for all the sins and suffering of a conflict is a little harsh but honestly, given the prospects of anything else working, is it maybe not worth a chance? A little ginger sacrifice for the gods of peace and prosperity?

I've been checking the source of quotes for my forthcoming book, and the performance of Gemini is extraordinary. I paste the quote into Google, and Gemini will barge in with the wrong answer over and over again. It's not an occasional thing - it's reliably wrong. Very odd.

Far be it from me to perpetuate national stereotypes HOWEVER this is what a proper selection of potatoes looks like. Taken in a small Kerry supermarket with 2 checkouts. I counted 16 different types, sizes, and brands of spud. Which is about right.
Coloyr photograph of a display of bagged potatoes in a supermarket. In the front row are large paper bags of Keogh's Queens, Roosters, and Maris Pipers, as well as another brand. Behind them are various other brands with different sized bags, and also Golden Wonders, Roosters, and baby new potatoes.

It's craven, it's politically stupid, and it's morally wrong. Number 10 does not struggle to get Andy Burnham in front of a camera when it wants him to be there. Every minute he's not on show over this is the result of a deliberate decision.
