it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

The “jaw-dropping” El Niño currently heating up the planet has burst through the highest temperature ever recorded for the phenomenon, several months before its expected peak.
A line chart showing temperature anomalies in the Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean, compared to a 30-year rolling base period since 1982.

A gold line shows temperatures in 1997, a teal line in 2025, and a red line in 2026. The red line surpasses all others reaching 3.07ºC, and at an earlier point (September) than the previous El Niño that reached a comparable range in November 2015.

Black text on a white page that reads:

🚨EXTREME HEAT WATCH IN NYC🚨

Wednesday through at least Saturday, heat indices will surpass 100 degrees, potentially reaching 109 on Friday.

These are extremely dangerous conditions, and New Yorkers must plan now to stay safe and help their neighbors do the same.

The best way to prepare for extreme heat is to identify a safe, air-conditioned place you can spend the hot days.

If you don't have air-conditioning at home, plan to stay with family and friends or visit a free, public cooling center. Beginning Wednesday, the City will activate hundreds of free locations across the city.

Find one nearest you, including accessible and pet-friendly options, by visiting nyc.gov/beattheheat or by calling 311.

Once you have your heat plan, check in on your neighbors — especially seniors, outdoor workers, and people with chronic health illnesses — to make sure they have one too.

Under the City's Heat Emergency Plan, the City has been planning since last week for what may be a historic heat wave. We will continue to share heat safety guidance and emergency updates throughout the week.

Sign up for emergency alerts by texting NOTIFYNYC to 692-692 and visit nyc.gov/beattheheat for more guidance.

Advanced AI tools should be able to analyze these aspects (from Ran's post), right? Especially readers that are not top experts themselves might benefit from indicators (outside the author's own words) of what are the aspects where a particular paper shines.

I'm not a fan of ranked lists, but re your #2, AI tools would have potential to capture the different dimensions, which would actually add something new and constructive - a paper can be a great contribution for many reasons. It's a shame (and maybe a little surprising) they didn't go there.
