I believe that housing and transportation are the two understated drivers of inflation and reducing costs on both of those could definitely help tame inflation.

I lived in a place that capped development. The state capped their units (for evacuation purposes) and the city capped building heights. What followed was a steady and then quick growth in housing costs, wage costs to make up for housing costs, then general costs to pay for the wage costs.

What if AI is evil not because it is computer, but because trying to build cognition from the discarded thoughts of the past is like trying to harvest graveyards for meat or tapping into Hell for geothermal energy?

When you cut local funding mechanisms, you remove services and defund schools. These actions make those cities undesirable places to live. People then move out of the state to get better services and schools. State loses population and begins a bigger doom loop.

Many cities are staring at this time bomb and not realizing the best way to defuse it is with infill and more people. Meanwhile states keep doing property tax cuts that don't affect their budget (yet)

In 2010 the Oregonian wrote a story about international immigration & I wrote them a letter about how increased immigration was one of the best things we could do for future public services. The reporter replied saying it was an interesting claim since most other responses had claimed the opposite.

In a housing shortage, you can have first come first served rentals, or auctions. Many think a landlord is evil if they go the auction route, few acknowledge the FCFS route hurts tenants that can't devote hours of time every day to searching listings and applying before even seeing the home.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Thr parents' association at my kids' school included a NIMBY flyer about a proposed seniors residence across the street from the school. They are asking to raise $20,000 to hire lawyers to fight it at the OLT! Say the line, Bart:
"We are concerned about traffic congestion as well as the safety of our children and seniors.

We understand the need for affordable housing, but a 54-unit building is too big for the lot where a single family home once stood.

There is no resident parking or pick-up/drop-off area.

Garbage bins for 54 units will be on the boulevard.

If this building is approved, it will set a precedent for similar sized buildings to be developed in our community."

Drivers straight up refuse to parse & understand signage and road markings, and I'm not sure what we need to do about that but the first step is getting serious about that fact! One-ways with contraflow bike lane are not that complicated, and yet drivers refuse to understand them!

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
