The cope from some Man City fans is that the sham sponsorship income meant the club overstated revenue and so overpaid corporation tax. So they are due a refund! Awesome! Um, no. City paid *zero* corporation tax because they lost buckets of money. The receipts:

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

I have always believed that the establishment is the problem not necessarily the politics of any one candidate. The road to government is paved with good intentions. But the destination is spiders web of bondage to which most ideologies supinely succumb. Makes Mamdani seem like he drank magic potion

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Arsenal set piece league goal 1. Calafiori vs Utd (0:04) Is an Arsenal player sticking his arm across the keeper's chest and holding his arm down as he tries to claim the ball? No. Saliba's definitely jostling here, but by no means to the same extent. youtu.be/L-GpqZMAwr8?...

this is fucking unreal stuff from Noah Wyle on the magic of The Pitt. www.gq.com/story/noah-w...
“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

Sharing from a friend, a passage from the Leveson Inquiry regarding the British actor Denholm Elliott, who died of AIDS in 1992. Three years after her death, the News of the World journalist Paul McMullan did the following to his daughter—neither a celebrity nor even someone of public interest.
BROOKE GLADSTONE:
The Inquiry brought up the case of Denholm Elliott's daughter -
PAUL McMULLAN:
Oh, yeah -
BROOKE GLADSTONE:
- which is one case that you truly do regret.
PAUL McMULLAN:
I do, yeah. After Denholm died, she hit rock bottom, was allegedly doing methadone. And although she had, you know, the half-million-pound flat that Denholm had bought her, she didn't have any money to get her ten-pound bag in the morning. So she'd get up and go begging at the tube station.
Here was a young girl crying out to be helped, and she met a police officer who didn't help her but rang up the News of the World and asked for money because he couldn't believe that this is the same girl who'd walked down the red carpet behind Eddie Murphy with Denholm Elliott, you know.BROOKE GLADSTONE:
And you offered her 50 pounds -
PAUL MCMULLAN:
Yeah.
BROOKE GLADSTONE:
- if she would come to your place and have sex. So you led her into prostitution, which she wasn't in that space for.
PAUL McMULLAN:
No, indeed. But she was in such a bad place that someone offering her 50 pounds for sex. I mean, that's five bags.BROOKE GLADSTONE:
So how do you justify that? Yes, she was a drug addict, yes, she was begging. Why push her that extra step? Why take pictures of her topless?
PAUL McMULLAN:
I was keen. It was in my first year. I wanted to impress Piers Morgan, who was my boss at the time, and just wanted to say, not only have I caught this girl begging, but l've got pictures of her topless and I've got her offering me sex for 50 quid. How great am I?
BROOKE GLADSTONE:
This is a pretty dehumanizing enterprise, not just for Jennifer Elliott, but for you, yourself.
PAUL McMULLAN:
Yeah, that's why I feel terrible about it, not just 'cause she killed herself afterwards, but I, I actually liked her as a person.

lmao this is great
I say all this not for the sake of Liam Rosenior, who I hope has a truly awful time as the nightmare club falls apart around him. I say it to venerate my team, and to plead, please, can we all fucking open our eyes. Look at how our opponents treat us. Look at how they come here, the fear with which they move; to play football at Emirates Stadium is to accept a smacked bottom and an early bedtime. Oh, how we wish they’d come and give us a go, so we could play them off the park, but they won’t, because that is not how you beat Arsenal; you beat Arsenal on your knees, with your hands clasped tight in a desperate prayer.

This is rather on the nose from Janan Ganesh about how thinking on the right of politics is boxed in on foreign policy when as Carney pointed out, middle powers will need mini alliances with multiple countries on an issue by issue basis www.ft.com/content/0429...
This isn't tenable. Yet the conservative movement is boxed in on all sides. It committed to a worldview a decade ago, when the planet was pro-trade, the US was friendly and Europe at peace, and now does not know what to do. The British right cannot seek closer economic integration with its own continent without admitting that Brexit was a stinker of an idea. It cannot defrost the relationship with China without upsetting its own side. It cannot get much tighter to Trump without needling the public. Which leaves what? Getting on really well with New Zealand is not a foreign policy

FT is like if a paper was read by both the French aristocracy and the lawyers that would eventually behead them. But the aristocracy only half reads it and mostly relies on gossip they heard in Versailles/their group chats while the lawyers read it and turn into jacobins.
