i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Partial solar eclipse tomorrow. Put the glasses on!
A city. There is an eclipse happening in the sky. A guy in a green and blue flannel stands in the street. He has longer blond hair like a 1980s action movie hero. He is wearing eclipse glasses. he points at someone and shouts, "Put the glasses on! Put em on!" The text reads: Always wear specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Safe solar eclipse viewers and filters must comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Never use eclipse glasses with scratched or damaged lenses.

I've gotten an increasingly hardline on more or less this type of response. The election had two outcomes. Any action that wasn't pro-Harris was pro-Trump. I don't care if you voted third party or didn't vote or whatever. You were pro-Trump, full stop.

...God DAMN this is good.
You people said both sides were the same. So why does every measurable thing now feel more punitive, more expensive, more cruel?

Kamala was the available off-ramp from catastrophe, and many people rejected that off-ramp because they preferred to feel righteous rather than be responsible. And for an entire year, these dishonest grifters used every available lie in the book.

Kamala was a cop. Kamala was a fraud. Kamala was “basically Trump.” Both sides were the same.

This was repeated, endlessly, with the confidence of people who believed their words existed in a vacuum. As though posting were a private act. As though saying something publicly, over and over again, had no effect on the people who saw it. And now, in the aftermath, those same people retreat into a series of convenient fictions.

“My vote didn’t matter.” Then what, exactly, did your voice matter for?

Why spend months speaking if speech is inert? Why post if posting does nothing? Why argue, persuade, signal, and perform if none of it carries consequence? You do not get to believe in influence when it flatters you and deny it when it implicates you.

“I was taking a stand.” Against what? The available reality?

Elections are not moral thought experiments. You are not grading the candidates on a curve for personal satisfaction. You are selecting between outcomes. Real ones. Material ones. The kind that determine whether people can afford groceries, whether rights are enforced, whether the state is actively hostile to its own citizens.

You did not reject Kamala Harris in favor of a better option. You rejected her in favor of nothing. And “nothing,” as it turns out, votes.
