😎 First glimpses from space! The new #Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first preliminary images during commissioning. Sentinel-4’s spectrometer is hosted on @eumetsat.int's MTG-S1 satellite 🧪🌍 @josefaschbacher.esa.int @ec.europa.eu @esaearth.esa.int
The new Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first images, highlighting concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Despite being preliminary, these images mark a major milestone in Europe’s ability to monitor air quality all the way from geostationary orbit, 36 000 kilometres above Earth.

This image depicts tropospheric nitrogen dioxide with clear pollution hotspots visible along the Mediterranean coast and over Italy’s Po Valley. This image presents a vertical column density of sulphur dioxide. A distinct plume can be seen emerging from Mount Etna in Italy and drifting south-eastwards over the sea. Although Etna is currently relatively calm, much larger plumes are typically observed during periods of heightened volcanic activity.

In addition to natural emissions from volcanoes, sulphur dioxide is also released through human activities, particularly from ships burning high-sulphur fuels and power plants using brown coal. This image shows a vertical column of ozone. While ozone high up in the stratosphere plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a pollutant, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory problems.

The overall ozone levels here are within the expected range. This image of Europe and part of North Africa is based on the first Earth radiance spectra measured by Sentinel-4. The false-colour image, generated by assigning the signals in specific spectral ranges to red, green and blue, shows the land, ocean and clouds as expected.

Carbon offsets, though widely used, often fail to deliver real emission cuts. They undermine global climate goals by enabling polluters to avoid reducing fossil-fuel use.

Carbon credits are failing to help with climate change — here’s why
The idea that emissions can be offset through projects that claim to avoid releases or to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is fatally flawed.

How AI can unlock an extra trillion barrels of oil
And deliver the volumes needed to meet resilient demand

Stronger-for-longer oil demand will heap pressure on the upstream industry to deliver new supply. I asked our subsurface experts, Dr Andrew Latham, Orla Marnell and Josh Dixon how artificial intelligence can identify opportunities to meet the challenge.
Why do we need to unlock new supply?
The slow pace of the energy transition means that oil demand is likely to be far more resilient than some thought just a few years ago. Wood Mackenzie forecasts annual consumption won’t peak until the early to mid-2030s, and cumulative demand will be almost 1,000 billion barrels through 2050.
Firm demand throws the spotlight onto where new supply can be sourced. Production from assets already onstream or justified for development will gradually decline under current investment plans from just over 100 million b/d today to 50 million b/d 2050, cumulatively 650 billion barrels. That leaves a huge supply gap of 300 million barrels.

To achieve this, it needs to: 1️⃣ Give national regulators a statutory mandate for the energy transition. 2️⃣ Create independent system operators and planners (ISOPs) to oversee grid planning in the public 🧵1/5
