It was Bulgaria’s battery boom that helped keep electricity flowing this summer when drought hit nuclear & hydropower. So why is the EU still backing expensive gas capacity, like Germany's gas-favouring capacity mechanism proposal? Clean flex over fossil fuels! www.euronews.com/2026/09/24/b...

Coal phase-out is inevitable, but Poland lagging behind. Closing the coal units at Dolna Odra is a step in the right direction. Replacing them with gas isn’t. Gas is another expensive, polluting fossil fuel. The path to lower bills & energy security is renewables & a robust grid to deliver them.

Very disappointing news coming from Brussels today as the @ec.europa.eu approves a new German subsidy scheme worth up to €35bn, most of which is expected to go to fossil gas plants and crowd out batteries and storage. Our reaction is below. COM press release here: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...
Our Senior Campaigner Alexandru Mustata says “In designing these auctions, Germany has thrown away the rule-book when it comes to EU State Aid rules regarding technology neutrality. By turning a blind eye to this rule-breaking, the Commission is failing to protect German households and businesses from the fossil gas industry.”

“Six months after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ensuing energy crisis, Germany is locking in reliance on subsidised gas plants. The German economy will remain strapped into the fossil-fuel rollercoaster for longer and Germans will be punished with price shocks and hefty electricity bills.

“Europeans have been suffering through a summer heavily marked by the climate crisis, which is being accelerated by our dependence on fossil fuels. The Commission should listen to the legal concerns raised by German businesses and civil society, and ensure that public money benefits the energy transition instead of putting unreliable fossil fuel giants in the fast lane for subsidy hand outs.”
