Althia Raj is doing some of the most important reporting out there right now, exposing how Carney is dismantling any semblance of Canada’s progressive values. Pharmacare, child care, now the environment… Please, pay attention. He’s eviscerating environmental laws worse than Harper. Than HARPER!!!
Screenshot of an article by Althia Raj: “Opinion | Mark Carney runs roughshod over the environment:
'It's worse than what Harper did'”Excerpt from Althia’s article reads:

“Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to make it easier to kill off endangered species, pollute waterways and risk human health, all in the name of fast-tracking private-sector development projects.
For a prime minister who dismissed progressive Liberal MPs concerns over spending on child care, health care and pharmacare during a caucus meeting this week, Friday's announcement on streamlining infrastructure project approvals is a further indication the party is moving to the right, further than anything Liberals have seen, and a giant call to action to all Canadians who care about the environment.”Excerpt from Althia’s article reads:

“"It's shocking," Anna Johnston, a staff lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law, told the Star. "This would represent by far the worst evisceration of environmental law in Canadian history, far worse than what happened under Prime Minister (Stephen) Harper's government in 2012."
"It's worse than what Harper did, I agree," said Steven Guilbeault, the Liberal MP and former environment minister. "This goes beyond what Harper proposed when he was in power, yes, that's true"
If the federal government's proposed changes go ahead, Guilbeault said it will mean "we will have no way of evaluating or understanding what are the human health and environment impacts of projects we are approving - and that the main criteria to evaluate projects moving forward, if this is adopted, is going to be economic development and nothing else will matter."
Phil Pothen, a land-use, planning, environmental and administrative lawyer at Environmental Defence, said the government's proposal would "grant any company or project the government chooses a blank cheque to just drive entire species to extinction or extirpation.”

Abolish ICE. A little journal comic from South Minneapolis. #iceoutmpls #iceoutcomics #iceoutofmpls
Just before Christmas, I got a puppy.
Her name is Minerva, and we call her *Minnie.

I'm still learning how to understand her.

Me: Do you need to go outside? Do you need to go outside, little baby? Do you need to do a poo?
Do you need to do a widdle piddle?

Minnie: Arf!

*I just call her "little baby" most of the time.

I'm also realizing I can't turn off the baby talk now.
Nobody tells you about that.

I got so lucky with my first puppy.
Her wonderful foster parents had her completely house-trained by the time we adopted her, so taking her outside for potty time has been pretty easy. I've got the puppy poopy routine pretty much down, now.

Me, putting on my coat: Let's see... I got the little poopy bags, puppy treats for bribes, jacket, scarf, phone… I think that's everything… Oh yes! And my passport. I had been carrying around my passport for a while, but I knew it didn't matter. This is wrong. Nobody is required to carry around their papers.

I became a US citizen when I was seven. Since I was born in a refugee camp, I was stateless.
The US is the only nation where I've ever held citizenship. It's the only passport I've ever had, and it still felt important. Protective.

I would hold it in my pocket like a talisman, like it might ward off ghosts or something. But I realized I was holding onto it basically out of superstition.
ICE will pick up anybody.

I know that.

So I tucked my passport away.

And I largely avoid leaving my house.I live a few blocks just South of George Floyd Square. I was in the neighborhood for that, too.
And all the neighbors came together to protect each other. We're already organized.
We'll do our best to get through this.

Me, to my dog: I hope I can take you for a walk someday soon. Won't that be nice, little baby?

Winter Song Part 2 (Thread 1/5) Part 1 is here : bsky.app/profile/seco...
Following part 1, part of this comic begins with the grim reaper, a little embarrassed, asking Santa Claus where he is headed after this.Santa replies that since he no longer visits homes on Christmas Eve, he hosts a rather impressive party instead.Santa talks about the party, and we see a sketch of it behind a panel with Santa and Death talking. He invites Death to join, and mentions that the party is a lively affair with elves, ghosts, old winter spirits, and mrs Claus, of course.Santa continues to talk, in narration boxes over a sketch of him in a more traditional Santa suit, surrounded by children. Santa says that while he is lucky to be here with friends and family, every Christmas Eve, all he can think of is the past.

One woman, then a model and college student in her early 20s living in Manhattan, said she attended four parties at the mansion. She cannot recall the names of most of the men she met at the gatherings, not even those Mr. Epstein directed her to “take care of” at two of them. Recruited by Ms. Maxwell and then abused by Mr. Epstein, she buried her shame and kept their secrets for years. But Mr. Trump’s presence stood out, she told The Times. He was a household name, someone Mr. Epstein often bragged about to the women around him, yet also seemed to compete with.

“It was like a pissing contest — who had the most women,” she recalled. She requested anonymity to describe her experiences in detail, saying she feared for her family’s safety after Mr. Trump said some of his critics could be executed for sedition.

I Want You to Understand Chicago
Politics Chicago
2025-11-08

I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.

Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again.

An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next.

Understand what it is to pray in Chicago. On September 19th, Reverend David Black, lead pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, was praying outside the ICE detention center in Broadview when a DHS agent shot him in the head with pepper balls. Pepper balls are never supposed to be fired at the head because they can seriously injure, or even kill. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us from the roof,” Black recalled. He is not the only member of the clergy ICE has assaulted. Methodist pastor Hannah Kardon was violently arrested on October 17th, and Baptist pastor Michael Woolf was shot with pepper balls on November 1st.

Understand what it is to sleep in Chicago. On the night of September 30th, federal agents rappelled from a Black Hawk helicopter to execute a raid on an apartment building on the South Sho…

In particular, they want leases to no longer necessarily remain in effect indefinitely, so that landlords have more options for creating tenant turnover. Current situation in left-hand column, proposal on the right:
Left column:

Under the RTA, all tenants have "security of tenure", which means
that tenants have a right to remain in their rental unit as long as they
follow the lease agreement and the RTA. Landlords cannot evict
tenants without a legally valid reason, and after a fixed-term lease
ends, the tenancy typically continues on a month-to-month basis.

Right column:

The government would consult on alternative options on lease agreement expiry that could allow landlords to control who occupies their units and for how long, allowing them to adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies. This could add flexibility for some landlords in the approach to leases, potentially unlocking additional rental unit stock.
