When I was an intern (25 years ago!), my J-school had a policy: no free work. Interns MUST be paid. In 2015, I had to tell young hires working on a project I was supervising who were working through lunches to knock it off. If this only works because you don’t take breaks, then it doesn’t work.

Follow up: the police released him, no charges. I took a video of VPD officers digging through his bag and then removing his handcuffs and letting him repack his backpack. Once the scene dispersed I approached the man, shared my contact info, and offered to share the video if he wanted it.
