There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

It doesn't have to be super intelligent to do damage. A misaligned agentic swarm or a bad actor can misuse the tech to cause major damage. That's the point. It doesn't have to be skynet to do substantial damage.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

This from Vanderbilt looks extraordinarily a) broad, b) vague, and c) at odds with free speech. Like faculty fail both if they suppress or promote political ideas? Which is it? There is no meaningful criteria here, except to give the institution a justification to selectively punish.

The top of the US govt abusing power with even trivial things *is* the story. Federal law enforcement warped around lies and assuaging one man’s hurt feelings. The cynical, above-it-all attitude of doesn’t matter, stop being hysterical, why not humor him for a bit is part of why we’re in this mess.

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

"The administrators gave us a big pot of money to hire someone else to ask ChatGPT why your work sucks."
Appiah: The decision was made to allow the authors of those internal reports to decide whether or not to make them public. They were the basis of our deliberation. I will make mine, which is about literary criticism, public at some point, and I think others will. But on the whole, I think it was right to do it the way we have, because we need people to think about the main conclusions and the main arguments, which are in this document.
We did a fair amount of research, including research using new artificial-intelligence methods to survey large bodies of text and see what was in them, and to identify themes and so on. My report will come with six appendices of such material, not produced by me but produced by the researchers that we were able to hire with the money that was given to us by the chancellors.
