The BC opposition is fracturing again, risking another BCNDP majority without a majority vote. First-past-the-post incentivizes non-compete deals and mergers over real choice. Proportional representation would let parties compete openly without stepping on each other’s toes.
A screenshot of a tweet by Rob Shaw (@RobShaw_BC) with a verified checkmark. The text reads: "NEW - @PeterMilobar and @Mike_A_Bernier - aka the Peter Party and CentreBC - to hold a joint press conference at 1pm today to announce a merger/cooperation agreement."

Alberta separatism isn’t just an Alberta problem. It’s a sign of a much deeper issue in Canadian politics
The collapse of political competition and winner-takes-all mentality has allowed fringe elements to hijack mainstream political parties.

As @acoyne.bsky.social writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.
Screenshot of a The Globe and Mail opinion article by Andrew Coyne titled “A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis.” Below the headline is a photo of politicians in the House of Commons, with one speaking and another seated behind him. The visible text argues that majority governments often do not represent a true majority of voters, noting recent governments formed with less than 40% support. It states that minority governments have produced important policy achievements because legislation must be negotiated rather than imposed, leading to more durable, broadly supported outcomes.

A majority government elected with just 43% of the vote giving themselves an extended summer vacation is a damning example of how first-past-the-post erodes democracy. Demand proportional representation so governments can no longer hide from accountability.

Most of Alberta is represented by one party that’s now in opposition—because first-past-the-post erased the diversity of how Albertans voted. When millions feel unheard, resentment festers, and separatist talk resurfaces. We need proportional representation now! #cdnpoli
Two pie charts titled "Federal Election 2025 – Alberta" compare how Albertans voted versus the seat distribution they received. The left chart, "How Alberta voted," shows 64.8% blue, 28.4% red, 6.4% yellow, and 0.4% other. The right chart, "What Alberta got," shows 91.9% blue, 5.4% red, and 2.7% yellow. A note at the bottom says "*37 Alberta ridings," highlighting the disparity between vote share and seat share.

The Liberals could win a majority with just 42% of the vote—even while getting fewer votes than the Conservatives. No matter who's ahead, this kind of distortion undermines democracy. It's time to demand proportional representation. #cdnpoli #Election2025
Forecast graphic for the 2025 Canadian Federal Election as of April 14, 2025. The Liberal Party is projected to win 178 seats with 42.3% of the vote, despite trailing the Conservatives, who are projected to win 144 seats with 44.3%. The Bloc Québécois is forecasted at 13 seats (3.8%), the NDP at 7 seats (5.7%), the Greens at 1 seat (1.7%), and the People’s Party at 0 seats (1.4%). A semicircle chart visualizes the seat distribution, showing the Liberals potentially forming a majority government with less than a majority of the vote.

where does the new york times even find these people
A screenshot of a New York Times update that says: In Grand Central Terminal, Leon Chang, 26, of Brooklyn, said he had not heard of congestion pricing and asked what it was. When explained it was a toll for cars entering Manhattan, he then asked “What do you mean? What is a car?” Walking outside, we showed him a vehicle parked on the street. He gently touched the hood of the car. “You wish to forbid these majestic beasts from entering the city,” he said in a wistful tone. “It is a folly of man. The desire to tame the world around us.”
