I see so much of the effort of the #climate movement is once again being effectively contained by the obsession with the global Climate COP approaching. Re-upping this piece I wrote last year (after threatening to write it for years), systematically detailing why I believe it's a waste of time.

Yeah, look, I think the state can do things that improve matters around the edges. There’s lots of examples of that. If we were in the 1990s and marginal improvements were useful, that’d be ok. And, tbh, that’s where I started. But that world is over. The state cannot do what is needed now.

In which Tim fairly effectively argues that the COP is about as useful as a Climate League of Nations. To what effect we can actually do WITHOUT the coercive power of nation level state in driving action is a bit more of a question for me.

I think it’s pretty obvious by now (to me, at least) that “the coercive power of nation states in driving climate action” isn’t a thing. The coercive power of nation states is entirely entwined with maintaining the extractive industries. To remove the latter, we must remove the former. I believe.

Today, the NSW Independent Planning Commission approved the largest coal project in the state's history, in a move Lock The Gate called "catastrophic system failure". That's the context in which @davidshoebridge.bsky.social takes on the leadership of the Australian Greens. Some thoughts here

I mean, this is it. I think the analysis of Israeli politics is silly, but the application onto Australia is silly cubed. Honestly couldn’t be bothered engaging with such inane nonsense.

Sorry, but the idea that Israel became how it is because of minor parties is utter ahistoric and ignorant nonsense. The genesis (and I use that word advisedly) of its current crisis goes way back beyond that, and is baked into the political culture.

George Woods summarises the context of NSW IPC's approval of HVO's coalmine extension (809 MtCO2e pollution) and the profound institutional failure it represents "our systems of government stand condemned. They have shown themselves to be incapable of dealing with the threat of climate change"
Excerpt from Tim Hollo's essay

"As my friend, Georgina Woods, the National Coordinator of Lock The Gate, wrote in sharing this news:

This was the first big mine expansion determined by the IPC since the creation of NSW's Climate Change Act three years ago and since the International Court of Justice advisory opinion about the obligation of states regarding climate change.

In the course of its deliberations the IPC heard from hundreds of people, many of them already directly harmed by climate change, and compelling evidence from experts on climate change, water, biodiversity and local air pollution. Over 4,000 objecting submissions were made. The approval comes despite overwhelming evidence that the project was not in the public interest and it was made under the best decision-making process of its kind in the country in a statutory framework that requires consideration of the public interest, intergenerational equity, downstream greenhouse gas emissions and the local impacts of climate change.

In our view, this decision is a turning point with much wider implications beyond the Hunter region and NSW. If this process, at this point in history, could not prevent the harm from this project, then our systems of government stand condemned. They have shown themselves to be incapable of dealing with the threat of climate change.

George declared this a "catastrophic failure" of the system."

“This is a devastating decision. It's a decision that will quite literally kill people - we will be able to attribute a measurable proportion of the increased deaths & disasters & destruction of property from accelerating climate chaos to this decision.“ #FossilFuel induced #ClimateChange #Auspol
Article excerpt
But I think the real earthquake here is that a major Australian climate and environment
organisation has today very publicly called this a catastrophic failure of our institutions. And they set out systematically exactly why that is. The process was clear. The context was clear. Everything was set up for the decision to be made to protect life. But the decision was
made to protect profits instead, and screw life. In my view, it's been obvious for quite some time that Australia's governing institutions - our executive governments, our parliaments, our media, our "independent" planning bodies, our police - have absolutely no capacity to actually face up to the reality of the climate crisis. Coercive, extractive power closes ranks to protect and prolong itself. As that photo at the top demonstrates again, governments will use the police to protect profits
against people and the planet. Many of us have recognised this for a long time. Many have talked about it, mostly quietly,
behind closed doors.

I strongly believe in grassroots membership election of the leader of a party that believes in grassroots democracy. I co-wrote this with @mehreenfaruqi.bsky.social a few years ago. If Mehreen wins, she’ll be the first leader of the Greens to be on the record supporting it.

I keep hearing this idea that "I don't like AI, but maybe it can solve climate change" and I just... what? Surely there is nothing about "solving" climate change that needs more computing power or ideas. It's purely about the interaction of power structures and social realities. Can we not?
