The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

The £36m donations are legal and to change the law retrospectively would be outrageous! Yes, it was announced in Parliament on 25 March that the legislation would apply to any donations from that day onwards, but that was the day all Reform MPs staged a walk-out, so we missed it.

UK firms could lose out as
EU gets better tariff rates

By Holly Williams
Donald Trump's latest tariffs have raised fears that British exporters could lose out after the EU secured more favourable terms, although the President launched a scathing attack on the bloc.
The UK is facing a 10 per cent tariff that replaces an equivalent levy that expired yesterday, having been declared illegal by the US Supreme Court in February. The EU rate was reduced from 15 to 10 per cent.
William Bain, head of trade policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that, while it would be
"business as usual" for most British firms exporting to the US, the UK must continue negotiating with the
US over tariffs.
"There will be concerns about the loss of the UK's competitive advantage over the EU and other countries which have secured a more favour-able deal in other sectors," he added.
A government spokesperson said:
"The preferential access secured under our agreement with the United States remains in place."
Trump later accused the EU of viewing America as a "piggybank," and called for an investigation into practices such as fining US tech firms that he claimed were "robbing
American companies"
"The EU will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct," he said.

Jacob Rees-Mogg
President Trump will be our greatest ally after
Brexit
Freed from ties to the EU, Britain can build a truly special relationship with this US

There is no democratic process to elect a PM. However much you might want one. There is a democratic process to elect a party. There is also a democratic process to elect a party leader (and hence PM, if in power), within the party. Which is what happened here, albeit there was no contest.
