In Texas, the State is removing climate change courses from the core curriculum. They have decided that climate change is just too dangerous to teach the students. This is indoctrination. I wrote an oped about it in the SA Express-News. Gift link: www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...

Texas can’t hide from climate change by stopping students from learning about it
Texas has removed climate change courses from core curriculum at public universities. Ignoring climate change will not serve the state.

To speak of an AI system "going rogue" is even more misguided that saying that one "wrote" something, because it implies not just consciousness but some kind of moral compass when neither of those things exist We need to combat overt illusions, but also those that are embedded in the language

Making college an assembly line of students fitted with degree components rather than a period of exploration & deep engagement is a shift that sacrifices a lot of what college can do for students.

There is no more "state of the humanities" as such. There is no condition in which the humanities are under attack in which the whole university is not under attack. There is no condition in which the university is under attack that the whole of educational
infrastructure, public and private, from pre-K up, is not under attack. And there is no condition in which education is under attack
in which civil society can remain unimperiled. There is no sense calling for independent or solitary action by something called "the humanities" when that category has been so thoroughly absorbed by concerted attacks on democratic governance, due process of law, rights to privacy, security, assembly, and expression.
We are all humanists now.

People who have never taught writing making suggestions like “just use it to generate ideas” and “just use it to proofread your work” as if those aren’t two of the many essential skills that actually help a fledgling writer develop a voice.

LAUSD and NYC Schools enroll approximately 1.62 million students. That’s about 3.2% of public school enrollment. Local organizing made this happen in the largest districts in the country. That means it can work anywhere. The 48 million children are waiting.

as for the publication, you really need to retire the insensitive “burger flippers” label. it’s so unnecessary when you can just say “service industry” or “hospitality”. disappointing to see men in scientific research still using it, their insecurity doesn’t need to be broadcasted

What is especially weird is that all of these approaches that the author tries to juxtapose with “explicit instruction” all have explicit instruction as part of any unit of study (and often every day via mini-lessons)

The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?
