What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now

Answering this question in Texas is pretty awful. With such a rich linguistic history, and San Antonio being a locus of refugee resettlement in years past, this place is amazing. And most local districts closed their newcomer campuses this year. Teachers are scared. Silence reigns. #literacies

Hardcore academia. Work, friends, social media, are all academia/academia adjacent. Though one teen is on Reddit, so I learn memes from him. I read romance, which has its own lang of tropes. And the language of San Antonio is its own. #literacies

Late to the party, but what a great start. Monolingual English, and yet after 20 yrs in TX, 10+ in San Antonio, the texture has changed. Spanish is now part of my soundscape, on campus, in the grocery store. I’ve learned to hear its cadence & music. Also, I’m on Bsky, which totally impacts things.

I did not expect the landing page to be a picture of a child face down (unsure if alive) on a frozen lake and a suggested prompt of “how can I invest in my child’s future”. This is higher level comedy than I am capable of on my own. This is incredible.

Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.

Seven Arizona State men’s hockey players asked the university’s president to place the Sun Devils’ coaching staff on administrative leave pending further investigation into the workout that left sophomore transfer Matthew Mayich on life support.

In a 26-page letter sent to ASU president Michael Crow on Monday and obtained by The Athletic, the players disputed numerous findings from the university’s initial review of the Aug. 20 workout, writing that Mayich did not receive water and was provided inadequate medical care after his collapse.

- The majority of reading k12 sts do is for standardized tests. - That is THE context they get to know. - That context DOES NOT transfer to anything useful. That kind of reading also steals their ability to develop a readerly identity. Without that identity, of course they can't "read."
