The August issue of Clarkesworld features cover art by Thomas Brissot. A young woman flanked by two robots with large swords aimed straight down appear to be conversing with a tall water bird on the edge of a leafy area. The title is "A Visit To The Oracle" and the bird's beak is open as if speaking. The background fades shows a palace of sorts behind the bird but only whiteness behind the other figures.

Free speech matters. So does verifying what's true. Without a stable historical record, accountability suffers. A new paper, THE POLITICAL THREATS OF VANISHING CULTURE AND THE NEED TO PROTECT OUR FUTURE MEMORY, explores why. 📖 Read or download ⬇️ journals.library.wustl.edu/pollib/artic... 🧵

What Is Safe To Eat? How I'm Thinking About Cyclosporiasis as of 2AM on Juky 23rd www.patreon.com/mattbc/posts...
So here's how I'm thinking about this:

Avoiding all uncooked produce provides the best reduction in risk from Cyclospora. If you really, really don't want Cyclosporiasis, avoiding all uncooked produce seems to me like the thing to do. Because of the way produce is packaged and moved, cross-contamination is much easier than I would like. (e.g. the lettuce in the supermarket refrigerator case drips on to the carrots). As we've previously discussed, heat kills Cyclospora.

Only eating produce from a known, trusted, local farm (or garden!) provides a similar level of risk reduction. But you only get that level of risk reduction if they're not co-mingling with 'bought in' produce. (e.g. some farmers run shops/stands/markets in which they sell their own produce, but also sell produce purchased from wholesalers). Lettuce from your own garden should not have Cyclospora.

If you're willing to tolerate a bit more risk by eating uncooked produce (or if your diet requires you eat uncooked produce), I would still avoid lettuce. At this point, lettuce does seem to be a main driver of this outbreak.

I would also not eat raw herbs or berries. Why? Table 1. Again, I'm being — what some would certainly consider — overly cautious. But because it seems like everyone involved is a bad faith actor, and cyclospora loves fresh herbs and berries, if those aren't a vital part of your diet, I might hold off for another week to see if additional evidence emerges from the various ongoing public health investigations.

if you've got a medically uncomplex toddler who only eats blueberries, I'd keep giving them blueberries.

if you're allergic to bactrim and immunocompromised, I'd probably skip the blueberries for now

I'm disappointed that @brianstelter.bsky.social is going to the appalling WHCD dinner. It is *not* at all useful for anything journalistically defensible. It's a celebration of smug clubbiness and, this year, of submission to disinformation and fascism. view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/177...
Why I'm going...

My POV on the dinner is summed up well by Eric Deggans on Substack.

"Yes, the optics of such an event can be terrible," he writes. But the gatherings themselves are "extremely useful" for reporters: "It's not often, when covering a beat expansive as media or politics, that you get to attend an event which brings together loads of people from your coverage area in one spot on one night. I always view such events as opportunities for source-building, vetting of coverage ideas and networking."

That's why I will be there this weekend. (Thank you, CNN, for the invite.)

1/ There's a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic that shapes Europe's #climate, drives monsoons, and keeps sea levels stable along the US coast. In the last 5 years, the scientific evidence that it could collapse has shifted dramatically. Most people have no idea. 🧵
