I've spent this week worrying a lot about whether or not I'd ever really write anything again. This morning I surprised myself by writing a tiny flash story! It was very reassuring.

I’m guest editing the next issue of Agita; send me your weirdest <1000 word stories about weird art. Authors from marginalized backgrounds encouraged and prioritized. No AI bullshit. The weirder the better. agitamag.com/submissions/
Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

The local haunt went straight for my feels this year.
A faux headstone has a pink ukulele resting against it; there's a tiny bust of Dolly Parton with pink wings at the top, and the inscription reads: Dolly | WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.

We watched a horror flick a few weekends ago, & I'm still angry about it. The only swear word in the whole movie was "fuck"! Where was the casual "shit" or the grumpy "sonofabitch" or the scathing "goddammit"? This isn't the first movie I've seen like this, and it makes me sad.

A graphic of various Three-Lobed Burning Eye's cover artwork images: A blue multi-armed monster standing next to a fox and what I think might be a blanket with eyes. Maybe it's a burnt-out tree - still with the eyes, though. And oh, yeah, they're bloodshot.

Next, there's someone wearing a helmet that's somewhere between medieval knight and plague doctor next to a creature that seems to be the big sister of Aku from Samurai Jack.

Then there's a wasp thingy with a skull for a head wearing a gold crown, and flying above a black hat that's sprouted tentacles. The hat-wearer peers at the reader, but we can only see its red pupils.

I don't know how to describe the last one, but it has lots of faces, eyes, and color. And ghosts.

Nice to have a citation for the stuff we all sort of assume to be true but question if it's just our own biases making it look that way
Screenshot from the article in the quoted post, saying "Piff and his colleagues found that upper-class drivers were more likely to cut other cars off at junctions and ignore pedestrians at crossings. Wealthier people also appeared more willing to lie at work. In one experiment, volunteers were left alone with a jar of sweets ostensibly meant for children. When the researchers returned, upper-class people had snaffled nearly twice as many candies as lower-class people.

“The general pattern seems to be that with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships,” Piff said. “Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritise one’s own needs over those of others.”
